SUPERVISORS SIGN OFF FOR CLEANING OF MUNCY TOWNSHIP FIRE HALL
Muncy Township Fire Company is expected to be cleaned this week after a sewage backup forced crews out of the Pennsdale firehouse. According to the Sun Gazette, Fire Company President Nick Palmatier says township supervisors have signed an agreement to bring in ServPro to clean the affected area. The company moved its trucks Tuesday to Muncy Area Fire Company in Muncy Creek Township because the station could not be used. Officials hope the trucks can return home by the end of the week.
CASE-WORKER CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE
A former Bradford County-area caseworker is headed to court on child abuse-related charges. Police say 54-year-old Valerie Weirback of Troy is accused of assaulting two children while they were in her care, including a boy younger than six who suffered a broken collarbone. Weirback was arrested June 19th and later posted 50-thousand dollars bail. Charges including felony aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment were waived for court.
CITY COUNCIL APPROVES FUNDS TO DIGITIZE RECORDS IN OLD CITY HALL
The city is moving ahead with scanning and digitizing records still inside the condemned City Hall on West Fourth Street. City Council approved a 120-thousand-dollar agreement with Data Management International, funded through a Williamsport Lycoming Competitive grant. Officials say the work will preserve paper records and help clear out the building as the city prepares it for a possible sale. Historical maps will be moved to the city codes office on Reighard Avenue.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY IN HUGHESVILLE
Hughesville will hold its first-ever Christmas in July Parade on Saturday, July 25th. The Greater Hughesville Business Association and GHBA Community Foundation say the parade steps off at 7 p.m. from Hughesville High School, with floats, decorated vehicles, music and holiday-themed entries. Denise Spotts will serve as grand marshal. Organizers are also partnering with Meagan’s Box Foundation for a community collection, and decorated homes and businesses along the route will be judged earlier that day.
MAN UNDER PFA SETS FIRE TO HOUSE WHERE HE WAS REMOVED
A Bradford County man is jailed without bail after state police say he set fire to a home the same day he was removed under a protection-from-abuse order. Police say 32-year-old Eric Barrett bought gasoline, broke into the Windfall Road home, poured gas inside, and started the fire. No one was inside, but a Canton firefighter suffered a burn while battling the blaze. Barrett faces arson, burglary, and related charges, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for today
MIFFLINBURG MAN FACES OVER 100 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF TEEN
A Union County jury has convicted 45‑year‑old Timothy Alan Dowhower of Mifflinburg on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges for sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a Lewisburg hotel in 2022 and 2023. After three days of testimony, jurors deliberated just 90 minutes before returning guilty verdicts on aggravated indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, sexual extortion, child endangerment, corruption of minors, and 18 counts of indecent assault. Dowhower now faces up to 106 years in prison and lifetime Megan’s Law registration.
PA GOVERNOR RACE DEBATES COULD BE ON BEFORE ELECTIONS
Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity is challenging Governor Josh Shapiro to seven public debates before November’s election. Garrity says she wants one debate in each of Pennsylvania’s media markets, arguing voters should hear directly from both candidates. Shapiro’s campaign says it is willing to discuss a debate but won’t negotiate details through the press. The proposal comes after Pennsylvania’s 2022 governor’s race went without a debate.
MOTORCYCLE CONVOY COMING TO WILLIAMSPORT TODAY
A cross-country motorcycle tour supporting veterans rolls into Williamsport today. Adam Sandoval will be at Horsepower Harley-Davidson as his 2026 Great American Convoy arrives at 1910 East Third Street starting at 4 p.m. The free event is open to the public, motorcycle enthusiasts and veterans, with all makes and models welcome. The convoy supports the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps post-9/11 veterans and their families.
