MINOR INJURIES FROM A SCHOOL VAN COLLISION
Two schoolchildren were evaluated after a crash involving a Mount Carmel Area School District van on Route 61 at the Burger King intersection. Police say the van, carrying two students ages ten and eleven, collided with a Buick driven by a 91-year-old Ashland woman, Helen Wedde, just before ten Wednesday morning. According to the News Item, The children were not injured. Wedde and the van’s driver suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
CASE OVER CYS WORKER ACCUSED OF INTERFERRING MOVED TO NORRY
Charges against a former Northumberland County Children and Youth caseworker accused of interfering in a criminal investigation have been moved to Northumberland County. Authorities say Keira Ruiz Ruiz impersonated a public official while attempting to influence a child abuse investigation involving her son. A judge ruled the case was improperly filed in Snyder County, allowing prosecutors to refile the charges. Ruiz Ruiz resigned from her county position after her arrest.
PA STATE TREASURER ENDORSED FOR PA GOVERNOR
President Donald Trump has endorsed Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity for governor in a post on Truth Social. Trump called Garrity highly respected and praised her background as a businesswoman and retired U.S. Army Reserve colonel. Garrity, a Bradford County native, launched her campaign in November and will be the Republican nominee on the ballot this fall. She later responded on social media, saying she was honored to receive the endorsement.
NEWBERRY PARK GETTING UPGRADES
A popular West End park is getting a major upgrade. Newberry Park will soon feature a regraded soccer and multi-purpose field, two new pickleball courts, a paved walking path, additional parking including accessible spaces, and a new concrete restroom. According to the Sun gazette, construction is expected to begin in July and finish around Labor Day, with the project funded through a Community Development Block Grant.
MAN JAILED FOR THREATENING WITH LOADED HANDGUN
A South Williamsport man is in jail after police say he threatened to shoot his brother during a confrontation outside their DuBoistown home. According to the Sun Gazette, Officers say 25-year-old Jermaine Frederick, Jr., was armed with a loaded handgun during the argument but did not fire any shots. He was taken into custody a short time later, and police say he was prohibited from having a gun due to a protection from abuse order. Frederick is jailed on seventy-five thousand dollars bail.
TWO SOUTHSIDE RESIDENTS INJURED IN HOUSE FIRE
Two South Williamsport residents were seriously injured in a house fire late Tuesday night. According to the Sun Gazette, Fire officials say a couple suffered severe burns in the blaze on Bedaro Drive and were rushed to UPMC Williamsport before being transferred to a burn unit. A neighbor, a retired fire chief, is credited with rescuing the woman from the burning garage – the couple’s identity has not been released. Multiple fire crews responded, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
EUREKA CLEAN UP FACING JANUARY 30TH DEADLINE
State environmental officials say inspections are continuing at Eureka Resources facilities in Williamsport following a wastewater spill last August that reached the Susquehanna River. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says large amounts of wastewater and waste oil have been removed, but violations remain outstanding. The company has been ordered to complete waste removal by a January thirty-first deadline as cleanup efforts continue.
TREE SEEDLINGS FOR SALE IN UNION COUNTY
The Union County Conservation District is now taking orders for its 2026 tree seedling sale. Orders are due by April first, with pickup scheduled mid-April at the Union County Government Building in Lewisburg. A variety of tree seedlings, soil test kits, and tree tubes are available.
