PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT IN SHAMOKIN
Police are investigating a crash involving a pedestrian and a Dodge van in the Shamokin area. According to the News Item, the crash happened around 6:30 Wednesday night near the Sunbury Street Playground at Sunbury and North Franklin streets. Police shut down part of Route 61 while they investigated. Witnesses say the vehicle occupants were not hurt but were concerned for the male pedestrian. A man was taken into custody at the scene, though police have not released any details.
ISURANCE FOR SOME COMMISSIONERS ABOLISHED
Commissioners voted to abolish their insurance coverage by majority vote, effective immediately, during a recent heated meeting in Coal Township. According to the News Item, the three-to-one vote followed debate over the lack of formal authorization for the benefits and concerns that more than four-hundred-thousand dollars in taxpayer money had been spent over several years. Supporters said the township can’t afford the cost, while the lone dissenting commissioner defended the coverage as necessary at the time.
BODY CAMERAS COMING FOR UNION COUNTY JAIL OFFICERS
Correctional officers at the Union County Jail will soon be equipped with body cameras. Warden Ryan Boatman says the county plans to purchase ten new cameras to be used during transports and hospital duty, providing both video and audio. The proposal, which still requires county approval, is aimed at protecting officers and detainees and aligning the jail with practices expected to become standard in correctional facilities.

CONTINUANCE ISSUED FOR SUSPECT WHO RAN OVER WOMAN
The defense attorney for a Montoursville man accused of intentionally running over a woman has requested more time to review evidence in the case. According to the Daily Item, a Union County judge granted the continuance Tuesday for 21-year-old Caleb Daniels, who is charged in a July incident at a McDonald’s parking lot in Kelly Township. Daniels faces attempted homicide and aggravated assault charges and remains free on fifty-thousand dollars cash bail as a new court date is pending.
MAN ACCUSED OF EMBEZELMENT TO FACE SEXUAL ASSAULT TRIAL FIRST
A criminal case involving the theft of eight-hundred-seventy-thousand dollars from the Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau is being postponed while the defendant faces separate sexual assault charges. According to the Daily Item, 44 year-old Timothy Dowhower of Mifflinburg is scheduled for trial in March on counts including aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors, with prosecutors saying the theft case tied to his former role as marketing director will move forward once that trial is complete.
OFFICIALS QUICKLY HIRED TO HANDLE PAYROLL IN MUNCY TWP
Muncy Township supervisors say they were trying to meet payroll for police and road crews this week following the sudden departure of the township’s office manager. According to the Sun Gazette, the board hired former Lycoming County controller Krista Rogers as temporary secretary treasurer, along with a payroll service. The meetings sparked controversy over public comment and advertising requirements under state open meetings law.
