ANOTHER ARREST AFTER SUNBURY STABBING
A third man has been charged in connection with a weekend stabbing in Sunbury. Police say 50-year-old Tiheef Marshall was jailed Thursday on felony charges including aggravated assault and robbery for his alleged role in the Dec. 6 attack that left a city man with multiple stab wounds. Two other suspects are already in custody, and Sunbury’s police chief says the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
JAIL TIME FOR MAN WHO COMMITTED ASSAULT IN SAYRE
A 39-year-old man with an extensive criminal history will serve up to a year in prison for an assault at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. James Dyer, formerly of Waterloo, New York, was sentenced to six months to one year in the Bradford County Correctional Facility after pleading guilty to simple assault stemming from a November 2024 altercation. Police say Dyer has prior convictions across several states, including drug offenses and multiple DUIs. He is currently held in the Bradford County jail.
WILLIAMSPORT CITY APPROVES HALF-MILL INCREASE
Williamsport City Council has approved a half-mill real estate tax increase as part of the 2026 budget. The move sets the tax rate at 17-point-55 mills, meaning a homeowner with a house assessed at 100-thousand dollars would pay about 1,755 dollars a year. City officials say the increase is part of a bridge budget strategy, aimed at stabilizing finances and putting Williamsport in a stronger position ahead of broader budget decisions planned for 2027.
HISTORICAL HOUSE TOUR IN CLINTON COUNTY
The Clinton County Historical Society is inviting the community to its Annual Open House and House Tour on Saturday. Festivities begin at noon at the Heisey House Museum, where visitors can buy tour tickets, browse gifts, and enjoy holiday displays by the Dogwood Garden Club. From 1 to 5 p.m., guests can explore some of the county’s most historic homes, including the Chatham/Ferguson House, the Hopkins/Widmann House, mid-century landmarks, and two decorated riverfront properties. The society encourages residents to celebrate local heritage and holiday spirit together.
WOMAN AT GUN RANGE INJURES SELF WITH GUNSHOT
Emergency crews responded to a reported shooting at the National Range and Armory on Washington Boulevard in Williamsport. Police say Thursday evening a woman was taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport with a gunshot wound that police say appears to be self-inflicted. Authorities say no one else was involved, no suspects are being sought, and there is no danger to the public as the investigation continues.
WOMAN IDENTIFIED IN FATAL CRASH
The Lycoming County coroner has identified the driver killed in Wednesday’s one-vehicle crash on German Road in Franklin Township. State police say as 33-year-old Tawnyrae Shook of Unityville lost control of vehicle while navigating a downhill curve near Bomboy Road around 3:20 p.m. Emergency crews reported the road was coated in snow and ice at the time. Her SUV left the roadway and struck a tree head-on. Shook was rushed to UPMC Williamsport, where she was pronounced dead at just after 4pm
FORMER DA APPOINTED TO SOLICITOR POSITION Kulpmont Borough Council has appointed former Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Matulewicz as its new solicitor, replacing Edward Greco, who was elected to the county’s Court of Common Pleas. The 6-0 vote comes as Matulewicz faces misdemeanor charges filed by state police, accusing him of possessing unauthorized prescription drugs and firing a gun while intoxicated at his Mount Carmel home in April. According to the News Item, Matulewicz told council he’s eager to serve the community. Council members said he was the only applicant and that any issues will be addressed if they arise.
LOCAL CREEK NOMINATED FOR RIVER OF THE YEAR
The Chillisquaque Creek is in the running for Pennsylvania’s 2026 River of the Year. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the creek is one of three finalists, along with the Conestoga River and the lower Schuylkill River. Online voting is open now through January 16. DCNR says the 20-mile Chillisquaque Creek spans four counties and offers fishing, recreation, and natural attractions across its watershed.
