Silverchair has ruled out a reunion performance at the 2026 NRL Grand Final, ending speculation that the Newcastle rock band might return to the stage for the major sporting event in Sydney.
In a social media statement, the band addressed calls for Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou to reunite after the Newcastle Knights reached the grand final. The musicians said they were too rusty to perform but made clear they were supporting their hometown team from afar.
The possibility of a Silverchair appearance had gained attention because of the group’s strong connection to Newcastle. All three members grew up in the area, and the band became one of Australia’s biggest rock acts after breaking through internationally in the 1990s.
Silverchair has not performed together since going on indefinite hiatus in 2011, making any potential reunion a major event for longtime fans.
The NRL Grand Final is scheduled for October 4 in Sydney. With Silverchair now officially out of the running, attention remains on who will handle the event’s main pregame entertainment.
