SWATTING INCIDENT LOCKS DOWN PENN COLLEGE
A swatting incident caused a major response at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport. Police say a call reporting an active shooter in the campus dining hall came in around 8:30 Monday morning. Officers searched buildings and placed the campus on lockdown, but found no threat. Officials later confirmed the call was a hoax. The shelter-in-place order was lifted and classes were canceled for the day as the investigation continues.
MAN HOLDS WOMAN AGAINST HER WILL
A Mount Carmel man is facing charges after police say he held a woman against her will inside a Lewisburg hotel room. Officers responded March 8th after staff reported a possible abduction. Investigators say 25-year-old Gavin Dehaven blocked the victim from leaving and made threatening gestures following an argument. He is charged with false imprisonment and harassment. Bail was set at 25-hundred dollars, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 26.
SPILL UNDER INVESTIGATION IN WEST BRANCH OF SUSQUEHANNA
State environmental officials are still investigating a petroleum-based spill in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River near Clearfield. The spill was first reported March 9th, and firefighters placed absorbent booms and pads near a storm drain believed to be the source. DEP says testing confirmed an oily sheen, but crews were unable to trace the drain line further. The source has not yet been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
LUDO, THE SERVICE DOG AND HIS HANDLER WILL KEEP WORKING
A new chapter for a familiar team in Lycoming County, as Ludo the facility dog and handler Jerri Rook will continue their work under a new agreement with the Lycoming-Clinton Joinder Board. Rook previously worked for former President Judge Nancy Butts, but her position ended after the judge lost a retention bid. According to the Sun Gazette, officials say Lycoming County Children and Youth had funded Ludo’s training, and the new deal keeps those services in place, with Rook splitting time between clerical work and support services for now.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CHARGES FOR LYCO MAN
A Lycoming County man is facing multiple charges following an alleged domestic violence incident and weeks of harassment. Police say 45-year-old Malik Carroll Poleto is accused of assaulting a woman in December while a 10-year-old child was in the room, allegedly choking and attacking her. Investigators say he later sent hundreds of threatening messages and even chased the victim in his vehicle. Poleto is now in county prison on 125-thousand dollars bail.
MAN USES COUNTERFEIT BILL TO MAKE PURCHASE
A Union County man is facing charges after police say he used counterfeit money to make a purchase. Authorities say 59-year-old David Young of New Columbia allegedly used a fake 100-dollar bill to buy a chainsaw at a rental business in East Buffalo Township. Investigators say the bill was clearly marked “copy,” and surveillance video helped identify Young. He later admitted he must have used the counterfeit bill. Young now faces forgery and theft-related charges, with a preliminary hearing scheduled.
CLASS ACTION SUIT OVER MEDICAL HIRING BETWEEN SYSTEMS
A federal judge has approved a 28.5 million dollar settlement in a class action lawsuit involving Geisinger and Evangelical Community Hospital. The lawsuit alleged the two systems had an illegal agreement not to recruit each other’s workers, suppressing wages and limiting job opportunities. The agreement reportedly lasted for several years before being uncovered during a federal investigation. Eligible healthcare workers across several counties will receive compensation, with a minimum payment of 250 dollars under the settlement.
MAYOR BROSIUS WANTS PUBLIC TO GET INVOLVED
Sunbury’s mayor is calling on residents to get more involved in their community. Mayor Josh Brosious says participation in city boards, committees and events has declined, and he’s encouraging people to step up and help shape the city’s future. According to the Daily Item, he’s also urging residents to attend council meetings to stay informed and have their voices heard. Local organizations say volunteers are essential to keeping events and initiatives running.
