FLAGS AT HALF STAFF FOR FALLEN TROOPER
Flags have been ordered to half-staff across Pennsylvania after a state trooper was shot and killed Sunday night in Chester County. Investigators say Corporal Tim O’Connor had pulled over a driver reported to be driving erratically when the suspect opened fire. The gunman later took his own life. Governor Shapiro says the state mourns with O’Connor’s family and the Pennsylvania State Police.
ICE RINK REPORT SHOWS SOME INTERNAL PROBLEMS
An independent review has found no fraud or criminal activity at the Sunbury Ice Rink, but it did identify several internal control problems. The report, presented to Sunbury City Council, cited issues such as weak oversight of cash handling, inconsistent deposit procedures and limited inventory monitoring. Officials ordered the review after about nine hundred dollars in cash and five hundred dollars in items were reported stolen. City leaders say steps are already being taken to improve accountability, including installing a cash register and strengthening financial procedures at the rink. City officials are also discussing the possibility of a broader forensic audit.
POCKET PARK FUNDING TO BE USED FOR CITY STREET UPGRADES
Williamsport is shifting funding away from a proposed neighborhood pocket park and toward street reconstruction. City Council approved moving forty-five thousand dollars from the city’s 2025 Community Development Block Grant funds that had been set aside for the Scott Street pocket park. Officials say the park project simply is not ready to move forward at this time. The small park had been planned as part of a housing project involving six new homes by Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity. According to the Sun Gazette, city leaders say the park idea could be revisited in the future, but the money is better used for street work right now.
TREE SEEDLING SALE
The Union County Conservation District is now accepting orders for its annual tree seedling sale. Residents can buy bundles of ten bare-root trees or shrubs for fifteen dollars each, including varieties like white spruce, elderberry and chestnut oak. The seedlings can be used for landscaping, wildlife habitat and erosion control. Orders must be placed by April first. For information or to order, call 570-524-3860.
SUNBURY MAN AWAITING PLEA DEAL APPROVAL FROM JUDGE
A Sunbury man has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges and is awaiting a judge’s decision on a plea agreement. Forty-seven-year-old Carlose Javier Ramos-Mercado pleaded guilty to two counts after an investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police computer crime unit. Troopers say the case began after a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children involving files uploaded to Dropbox. Investigators later found hundreds of images and videos on devices inside Ramos-Mercado’s South Fourth Street home. A Northumberland County judge will decide whether to accept the plea deal.
ORDINANCE FOR FOOD TRUCKS TO MOVE EVERY THREE DAYS
Food trucks in East Buffalo Township will soon face new limits on how long they can stay in one place. Township supervisors unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that would require mobile food vendors to move after three days. Officials say the rule is meant to ensure that food trucks remain mobile and to address sanitation concerns. The proposal was prompted by a truck that had been parked long-term at the former Perkins along Route 15. Vendors would also need a 90-day license costing twenty-five dollars, and could not operate between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
