ONE CAR ACCIDENT SHUTS DOWN ROUTE 61
Route 61 in Shamokin was shut down for several hours Thursday morning after a one-vehicle crash that destroyed a utility pole just north of the Coal Township line. Police say a car driven by 24-year-old Pedro Gomez-Martinez of Shamokin left the roadway around 7:40 and struck the pole, sending pieces into the vehicle. A front-seat passenger was trapped and taken to Geisinger Medical Center, while the driver and another passenger got out on their own. PPL crews closed the highway while replacing the damaged pole.
TWO WOMAN CHARGED WITH PERJURY
Two women have been charged with perjury in connection with the trial of a Lycoming County man convicted of indecent assault involving a minor. Investigators say Miranda Nicole Rinker and Felicia Nicole Auman gave false testimony while appearing as defense witnesses during Bradley Rinker’s trial last October. Court records say they denied knowing about statements the victim had made before charges were filed. Bradley Rinker was later found guilty of his charges including indecent assault of a child under 13. The two women were arraigned this week and released on $15,000 bail.
NEW DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY FOR WILLIAMSPSORT
Lycoming County has appointed Forest W.S. Rothchild as its new Director of Public Safety. County commissioners announced the selection after a national search for a leader to oversee emergency management and public safety coordination. Rothchild brings more than 20 years of experience in law enforcement, emergency management and military service, and previously served with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida State Guard. Rothchild and his wife are relocating to the Williamsport area.
RAISE THE REGION FUNDRAISER COMING NEXT WEEK
Hundreds of nonprofits across north-central Pennsylvania are preparing for the annual Raise the Region giving event. The 30-hour online fundraiser starts up 6pm next Wednesday through 11:59 p.m. Thursday and will feature more than 340 organizations serving seven counties. Donations made through the Raise the Region website will be boosted by a 175-thousand-dollar stretch fund from Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, along with additional prize incentives for participating nonprofits. INJURED BASEBALL FAN SUES CITY, MLB, CROSSCUTTERS
A woman has filed a lawsuit after being struck by a foul ball at Williamsport’s Historic Bowman Field. The suit says Deborah Barbella suffered serious facial injuries during a Penn College baseball game in May. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, t accuses Major League Baseball, the Williamsport Crosscutters and the city of Williamsport of failing to install expanded protective netting that was required at minor league stadiums. Bowman Field, which opened in 1926, regularly hosts college and professional baseball games.
NEW CODE OF CONDUCT IN COAL TOWNSHIP
Coal Township commissioners have adopted a new code of conduct aimed at improving behavior during meetings. The board voted three to zero to approve the resolution Thursday. Chairman Vinny Clausi said the policy was proposed after recent arguments and disruptions at township meetings. The rules require commissioners to act professionally, avoid personal attacks and follow proper meeting procedures. Commissioners who continue disruptive behavior after a warning can be removed from the meeting by an on-duty police officer.
LOCAL TEAMS TO COMPETE IN ODYSSEY OF THE MIND FINALS
Three Williamsport Area School District Odyssey of the Mind teams are advancing to the state finals after strong performances at the regional tournament in Berwick. Teams from Curtin Intermediate School and Williamsport Area High School each took first place in their divisions, while a team from Williamsport Area Middle School finished second to qualify. Odyssey of the Mind is a student-driven program focused on creativity, engineering and problem solving. The state finals are scheduled for March 28 at Pocono Mountain School District.
WATCH HOPE AND PEACE ON THE HANOVER EAGLE CAM
The famous Hanover Bald Eagle nest is active again for the new nesting season, and viewers can watch it live online. The Pennsylvania Game Commission and HDOnTap host the Hanover Eagle Cam, giving wildlife fans a close look at the birds. Observers believe a new pair, nicknamed Hope and Peace, has taken over the nest, and the first egg of the season was laid March 2. A second egg could arrive soon.
