TRACTOR TRAILER OVERTURNS OFF OF ROUTE 15
A tractor-trailer driver is safe after a dramatic crash along Route 15 in Lycoming County. State police say the empty rig took out about 60 feet of guardrail before plunging down a 50-foot embankment south of Buttonwood around 10:15 Monday morning. The 36-year-old driver from Mount Laurel was not hurt. According to the Sun gazette, Trout Run Fire Chief Nick Smith said after climbing out of the cab, the driver used a rope tossed down by firefighters to pull himself back up the steep embankment.
PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR BOMB THREAT IN DANVILLE IDENTITIFED
A bomb threat reported earlier this month at Danville State Hospital has been traced back to a patient inside the facility. State Police say 22-year-old Ashton Smith allegedly made a hoax call on February 3, claiming explosives had been planted on the property. Troopers and emergency crews responded and secured the hospital before determining the threat was unfounded. Investigators say Smith later admitted he made the call out of frustration over restrictions. He now faces terroristic threats and disorderly conduct charges.
FLAGS AT HALF STAFF FOR REV JESSE JACKSON
Flags across Pennsylvania will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 7, in honor of the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Governor Josh Shapiro ordered U.S. and commonwealth flags lowered on all state facilities and public grounds to coincide with the final day of memorial services. Jesse Jackson was a longtime civil rights activist and Baptist minister who frequently visited Pennsylvania to advocate for labor and voting rights. Shapiro called Jackson a change maker and unrelenting crusader for equality, inviting all Pennsylvanians to join in paying tribute.
THON BROKE THEIR FUNDRAISING RECORD AGAIN
Penn State THON has set a new fundraising record, bringing in nearly $18.8 million during its 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon at the Bryce Jordan Center. Organizers say that’s about $1.1 million more than last year and marks the fifth consecutive annual record. THON partners with Four Diamonds to support families battling childhood cancer. Since 1977, the event has raised more than $254 million.
FATAL ACCIDENT ALSO INJURED TWO OTHERS
Matthew L. Eberly, of Lewisburg, was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday night on Colonel John Kelly Road in Kelly Township. State Police say the driver, Shawn R. Miller, 18, of Watsontown, failed to negotiate a slight right-hand turn, sending the SUV across the opposite lane and into an embankment and tree. Eberly, who was seated in the rear, was pronounced dead at the scene. Miller and front-seat passenger Greg R. Martin, 18, of Mifflinburg, suffered suspected serious injuries. Police say none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.
MAN HELD FOR TRYING TO FLOOD JAIL CELL
Police in Shamokin say a disturbance call ended with a man accused of trying to flood the police station. According to the News item, Hoyt Antonio Norris was taken into custody February 15 after officers were called to a residence where he was allegedly unwanted and acting disorderly. Once at the station, police say Norris used toilet water in an attempt to flood a holding cell, removed his clothes and threw items into the hallway, and spilled water on an officer. He faces multiple charges, including felony institutional vandalism, and is being held on $25,000 cash bail.
HS CREDIT REQUIREMENTS INCREASING AT SOUTHERN COLUMBIA
Southern Columbia Area School District has approved new graduation requirements, increasing the minimum credits to 25 for students in the Class of 2029 and beyond. Current juniors and seniors will remain under the 22-credit requirement. The change also means early college courses can no longer replace required district classes, though some students already enrolled are grandfathered in. Administrators say the goal is to ensure students complete core coursework within the district’s curriculum before graduating.

She says she’s honored to lead the program and continue supporting families, while officials praised Bittner’s decades of dedication to the community.
