FATAL CRASH IN LAIRDSVILLE
A Lairdsville woman lost her life in a crash Wednesday afternoon when her SUV slammed into several trees at German and Bomboy roads. Emergency crews say the 33-year-old from Franklin Township lost control on a slick downhill stretch around 3:15 p.m. Lairdsville Fire crews extricated her from the wreckage as responders performed CPR, but she was pronounced dead at UPMC Muncy just after 4 p.m. State police are investigating, and the victim’s name will be released once her family is notified. Unityville and Muncy Area firefighters also assisted at the scene.
TREASURER OF SOFTBALL TEAM ARRESTED FOR THEFT
State police say a former treasurer of the Silver Bullets fast-pitch softball travel team is charged with stealing nearly $13,000 from the organization. According to the Sun Gazette, it’s alleged that 39-year-old Kari Rebecca Montoya of Old Lycoming Township took the money between last November and June, admitting she used team funds for personal expenses and failed to properly track accounts. Montoya was arraigned on two felony theft counts and released on $15,000 bail as the case moves forward.
PA WATER BILL INCREASE TABLED FOR NOW
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has unanimously voted to suspend and investigate a proposed rate hike by Pennsylvania-American Water Company, which serves more than 680,000 water customers statewide. PAWC is seeking a $168.7 million, or nearly 15%, increase in annual revenues. As proposed, typical residential bills could rise anywhere from about $3 to nearly $28 a month for water service, with wastewater increases as high as $26. The PUC has delayed the plan for up to seven months while an administrative law judge conducts hearings, with a final decision expected by August 2026.
MIFFLINBURG’S CHRISTKINDL MARKET THIS WEEKEND
The public is invited to Mifflinburg’s 36th annual Christkindl Market. The event opens today and runs through through Saturday, turning Market Street into an old-world European Christmas village. More than 100 craft and food vendors will line the street with handmade gifts, German music, and traditional foods like bratwurst and strudel. SAYRE WOMAN JAILED FOR SECOND DUI
A Sayre woman will spend up to six months in jail after being convicted of her second DUI this year. Twenty-five-year-old Dyanni Quattrini was sentenced in Bradford County court after being found to have a blood alcohol content of point-one-four during a crash on Route 220 in Athens in February. The legal BAC limit in Pennsylvania is point-zero-eight. Police say she had also been convicted of DUI earlier this year in New York.
NEW TROOPERS ASSIGNED TO MONTOURSVILLE
Five new Pennsylvania State Police troopers will soon be assigned to Troop F in Montoursville following graduation of the 174th Cadet Class at the State Police Academy. Forty-nine troopers completed nearly 27 weeks of training and will report to their new posts December 15th. AUTO SENSORS IN LEWISBURG ON FAIRGROUND ROAD REMOVED
Motorists and pedestrians should expect changes at the Fairground Road crossing in East Buffalo Township. The Union County Trail Authority says automatic sensors on the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon system have been removed due to repeated malfunctions. The flashing beacons remain, but pedestrians must now press a button to activate them, similar to a standard crosswalk. Officials remind drivers they must yield to anyone in the crosswalk, and pedestrians and cyclists are urged to use extra caution and obey all posted signals.
WASD CHRSITMAS TREE SHINES AWARENESS ON IMPAIRED HOLIDAY DRIVING
Williamsport High School students and safety agencies have teamed up to raise awareness about impaired and teen driving with a traffic crash–themed Christmas tree now on display at the Williamsport High School library. The tree’s lights and ornaments represent last year’s crash data in Lycoming County, including 897 crashes and seven impaired-driving fatalities. The display is part of PennDOT’s “Operation Safe Holiday” campaign, which runs through the end of the year and focuses on preventing impaired driving during the holidays.
