WOMAN ARRESTED FOR TAKING SNAP BENEFITS WHILE INELIGIBLE
A Montandon woman is facing felony charges after investigators say she defrauded the state of more than $2,400 in public benefits. According to North Central PA dot com, 38 year old Jayne M. Zarr, was charged with felony fraud after she failed to report her employment earnings from September 2023 through April 2024 while receiving SNAP and medical assistance, totaling $1,426 in food benefits and $1,029 in medical aid for which she wasn’t eligible. Investigators verified the woman’s employment with the Lewisburg Area School District and Adam Transportation. Zarr’s felony charge was filed in Sunbury District court, and her bail was set at $10,000 unsecured.
POLICE LOCATE AND ARREST CAR THIEF WHO FLED ON FOOT FROM POLICE
A Sunbury man was arraigned last week on third-degree felony theft and second-degree misdemeanor evading arrest after allegedly stealing a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. According to the News Item, police say the vehicle was reported stolen September 1 by the owners and later traded to a man known as “Brooklyn,” a pseudonym for 40 year old Marvin Raheen Lamar who is facing the theft charges. Officers located the car September 12 and attempted a traffic stop, prompting a foot chase until Lamar was caught nearby. He was committed to jail on $10,000 bail, with a hearing set for September 23.
NEW LOCATIONS FOR TROOPER AND LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING
The Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission has approved new police academies at Bucks County and Luzerne County Community Colleges, creating additional opportunities for aspiring officers in Bucks, Luzerne, and surrounding counties. According to the Shapiro Administration, since January 2023, they have secured funding to hire more than 800 new Pennsylvania State Police troopers and supported the hiring of 700 local officers through grants from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES THE MLB CONTRACT ABOUT THE LL CLASSIC
The future of Major League Baseball’s annual Little League Classic at Bowman Field was discussed at the latest city council meeting. According to the Sun Gazette, Williamsport Councilman Jon Mackey opposed the city’s latest contract with MLB, saying taxpayers are paying too much for police and parking, citing more than $22,000 in public safety costs alone and proposing a raise of the rent, while Councilman Randy Allison warned against an adversarial stance. The Classic, along with the two weeks of the Little league World Series, generates an estimated $40 million for the region.
HIGH SPEED CHASE IN MIFFLINBURG LEADS TO ARREST
A Union County man is now facing charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through Mifflinburg last month. According to North Central PA dot com, officers say 20-year-old Nathan Cataldi took off from a Sheetz parking lot around 1 a.m. August 16th in a black Audi with illegal window tint. Police say he sped through borough streets, topping 120 miles an hour on Route 104 before officers lost sight of him. Cataldi was later apprehended and admitted to driving the vehicle and to traveling at excessive speeds. He’s now charged with felony fleeing police, reckless endangerment, and multiple traffic violations.
FORMER GREGG TOWNSHIP TREASURER SENTENCED
A former Union County township secretary has been sentenced to two to four years in state prison for embezzling more than $615,000 from Gregg Township to fund sports betting, trips, and personal purchases. According to the Daily Item, 56 year old Pamela Hackenburg, pleaded guilty to theft, identity theft, and access device fraud, admitting to stealing over $532,000 while serving as the township’s secretary and treasurer from 2019 to 2024. A Centre County judge ordered full restitution and two years of probation, citing thousands of thefts over her tenure and the financial and emotional toll on the small community. Investigators say Hackenburg left the township’s finances in disarray and jeopardized other employee benefits.
LEGISLATION INTRODUCED TO KEEP AI OUT OF THE CLASSROOM
Legislation to ban charter schools from using artificial intelligence as primary instructors has been introduced in Harrisburg. According to the Record Online, Representative Nikki Rivera, a Democrat from Lancaster, says the bill follows a rejected application from Unbound Academic Institute, which proposed AI-led instruction. Critics argue the move could stifle innovation, especially amid teacher shortages. The bill allows AI support roles, but prohibits schools from using it as the main delivery system of instruction.
NOVEMBER THANKSGIVING FOOD GIVEAWAY IN DANVILLE
Two Danville nonprofits are preparing to host their annual Feed a Friend Thanksgiving Food Giveaway, aiming to serve around 500 local families. According to the Daily Item, the Good Samaritan Mission and the Danville Riverside Food Bank will hold the event on November 8th from at Shiloh United Church of Christ, on Bloom Street in Danville. The program received a $5,000 boost this year from the First Community Foundation Partnership to help fund the giveaway.
