FIRE DESTROYS HOME IN BUTLER TOWNSHIP
A Butler Township home was destroyed in a two-alarm fire early Saturday morning. According to the News Item, Fire crews from three counties were called to Reichwein Road just after midnight, where flames were showing at the rear of the home. Lavelle Fire Chief Russ Hummel said access was difficult, forcing crews to lay more than 1,500 feet of hose to reach the blaze. Ten tanker trucks supplied water as firefighters worked for hours to bring the fire under control. The Ashland, PA homeowner, identified as Thomas Blakeslee, escaped unharmed with his three dogs, but the house is a total loss. A state fire marshal is investigating.
MAN CAUGHT STEALING FROM FAMILY MEMBER
A Williamsport man is accused of stealing more than $31,000 from his mother’s bank account. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 34-year-old Dietrick Budd Ruper Lamade used her information to make unauthorized PayPal transactions between April and May after being told not to use the card. The theft came to light when the victim’s electricity was shut off due to an overdraft. Investigators say a search warrant confirmed Lamade’s PayPal account was tied to the charges. He was arraigned on theft, fraud and related counts and jailed in Lycoming County Prison on $50,000 bail.
EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION TODAY IN SELINSGROVE
Susquehanna University will test its Emergency Notification System this afternoon at 2:55pm. According to the Daily Item, the system is designed to alert students, staff, faculty and the public during emergencies, with updates posted on the university’s website. Officials remind anyone on campus needing immediate help to call 911 or Campus Safety at 570-372-4444. University leaders say the system is part of ongoing efforts to keep the Selinsgrove campus informed and safe.
9/11 MEMORIAL RIDE TOMORROW IN MONTGOMERY
Thousands of motorcycles are expected to roll through Lycoming County tomorrow for the annual 9/11 Memorial Ride. The 42-mile loop begins and ends at the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery, honoring the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. President of the 911Memorial Coalition Tank Baird says the thousands of bikers and Americans riding in solidarity that day awesome to see. A raffle for a 2012 Harley Davidson Forty-Eight is new this year. Vendors and entertainment in Montgomery start tomorrow around 10am. A memorial service starts at 5pm with kickstands up at 6pm. FORMER BRADFORD COUNTY MAN IN COLORADO THREATENS LOCAL SCHOOL
A former Bradford County man is facing charges after threatening a Sayre Catholic school. According to North Central PA dot com, 62-year-old Ronald Fiorello of Colorado sent emails on August 20 claiming bombs had been planted at The Epiphany School. Police say the building was then evacuated and cleared by a bomb-sniffing dog, though no explosives were found. Fiorello was arrested in South Dakota and extradited to Pennsylvania, where he’s now held in the Bradford County Prison on $350,000 bail. His felony charges were waived to court this week, with a formal arraignment set for September 29.
MAN UNINJURED AFTER ACCIDENT WITH A COW
A New Columbia man escaped injury after striking a cow in White Deer Township. According to the Daily Item, state police in Milton say 37-year-old Logan Beers was driving east on Ridge Road around 5:30 Monday morning when the animal entered the roadway. Beers hit the cow head-on and came to rest about 10 feet later. He told troopers he was traveling 40 miles per hour and wearing his seatbelt. No injuries were reported, but police cited Beers for speeding.
PA STUDENTS ASKED TO PARTICPATE IN INNOVATION CHALLENGE
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is calling on high school students statewide to take part in the 2025–26 PennDOT Innovations Challenge. The competition is open to grades 9 through 12 and asks students to design ways artificial intelligence could improve safety in highway work zones. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll says the challenge gives students a chance to bring fresh ideas to real-world transportation problems. Regional winners will advance to a statewide competition, with the top team earning a monetary award. Submissions are due January 30, 2026. Details are online at penndot.gov/innovation

* A procedural error in last Saturday’s college football game between Kansas and Missouri will cost a Big 12 officiating crew its next assignment Friday.
* The mistake occurred during the wild second quarter of the game eventually won by Missouri 42-31. The Tigers scored a safety on a sack and offensive fumble recovery in the Kansas end zone. Instead of a free kick from the 20-yard line, the Jayhawks punted the ball. This was a violation of Rule 2 Section 16 Article 6 of NCAA Football.
