ICE AGENTS DETAIN ROOFERS IN MONTOURSVILLE
Federal immigration agents detained at least five roofing workers during a raid Monday morning in Montoursville. According to the Sun Gazette, a witness said U.S. ICE agents in vests and masks surrounded a bank on Broad Street around 10 a.m. and used ladders to bring the men down from the roof. The workers were handcuffed and placed in vans and unmarked cars and state police were at the scene but did not comment. Borough police also said they were not involved. No more details have been released, but it was the second such operation in Lycoming County this summer.
MAN ARRESTED FOR STRANGLING WOMAN WHILE DRIVING A CAR
A Williamsport man is facing charges after police say he strangled a woman inside an SUV on Maynard Street. According to North Central PA dot com, campus police at Penn College stopped the vehicle after the victim screamed for help. Officers say 38-year-old Francis Jose Nery put the woman in a chokehold, leaving red marks on her neck. She told police she struggled to breathe during the assault. Nery is charged with strangulation, simple assault and multiple traffic violations. Bail was set at $50,000, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 9th.
TWO FREE TREE PROGRAMS AT THE DEANE CENTER
Two free events on community trees are scheduled for September 24th at the Deane Center in Wellsboro. According to DCNR Bureau of Forestry, they join with partner groups to host a roundtable for North Central Pennsylvania municipalities, covering tree care, funding and hazard mitigation from noon to 3 p.m., then from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the public is invited to a session on planting, pruning and managing tree stress. LYCO YOUTH WINS HIS CATEGORY IN RECENT 4-H COMPETITION
Lycoming County’s Wade Smith took top honors in the junior shotgun category at the recent Pennsylvania 4-H state shooting sports competition in Huntingdon County. According to the Sun Gazette, the event brought more than 60 youth competitors from across the state to Penn State’s Ag Progress Days site and other ranges. Smith, representing Lycoming County 4-H, earned first place as an individual, showcasing the skills he developed through his local club. The contests, run by Penn State Extension, tested participants in archery, rifle, pistol, muzzleloader and shotgun, with an emphasis on safety, sportsmanship and responsible firearm use.
CHARGES HANDED OUT FOR THE THEFT OF TWO TRACTORS
Two Washingtonville men are facing felony charges after state police say they stole tractors from a garage in White Deer Township. According to North Cetnral PA dot com, 28-year-old Chevie Sullivan-Mingle and another man allegedly pushed tractors from a locked garage to the road, where police say 44-year-old Josiah Musselman waited with a trailer. Officers later recovered one tractor under a tarp at Sullivan-Mingle’s home and another hidden in a cornfield. Both are charged with burglary, theft and related offenses. Sullivan-Mingle was jailed on $25,000 bail, while Musselman remains wanted on a warrant.
JURY IN PLACE FOR TRIAL IN SUNBURY HOMICIDE IN 2022
A jury has been seated in the homicide trial of 45-year-old Randy Easton of Sunbury. According to the Daily Item, Northumberland County Judge Michael Toomey oversaw Monday’s jury selection, which took just over two hours. Easton is accused of shooting and killing 33-year-old Joseph Rice during a 2022 altercation on Third Street and Raspberry Avenue. Prosecutors say Easton fired three shots, hitting Rice once in the back, before fleeing and later being arrested at a Lewisburg hotel. Opening arguments are scheduled to begin Tuesday, with the trial expected to conclude Wednesday.
COVID-19 VACCINES MAY BE MORE READILY AVAILABLE
Pharmacies in Pennsylvania can now resume offering COVID-19 vaccines after the State Board of Pharmacy approved new medical authorities to guide distribution. Governor Josh Shapiro pushed for the move after confusion arose when federal regulators narrowed eligibility and the CDC’s advisory committee failed to issue updated guidance. The board added the FDA and major medical associations as “competent authorities,” giving pharmacies flexibility to provide shots. But experts warn access may still vary by location, age, and health status, and patients should call ahead before scheduling appointments.

The Lewisburg Downtown Partnership will host its Annual Downtown Soirée on tomorrow at the Campus Theatre on Market Street.
