No officers or bystanders were hurt. All involved troopers are on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
LEGISLATION FOR SPOTTED LANTERNFLY ERADICATION
Congress is taking aim at the spotted lanternfly. The new Spotted Lanternfly Research and Development Act, would make fighting the invasive insect a top federal priority and direct grant money to researchers through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The pest was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014 and is found in 19 states. Economists warn the insect could cost the Commonwealth more than 325 million dollars a year and nearly three thousand jobs. Penn State researchers are testing natural predators and new technology, but residents are still urged to kill lanternflies and destroy their egg masses to slow the damage.
GARRITY ENTERS GUBERNATORIAL RACE
Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity is the first Republican to jump into the 2026 governor’s race. According to press reports, the Bradford County native and combat veteran made it official Monday in a campaign video, vowing to fix problems she says Governor Josh Shapiro has created. Garrity is coming off a landslide re-election in 2024, where she broke the record for most votes ever won by a statewide candidate. Political observers expect GOP state Senator Doug Mastriano to also consider a run. Shapiro, who holds a 61 percent approval rating, recently dismissed talk about his re-election bid.
8 YEARS FOR MAN WHO STABBED MONTANDON MAN
A Milton man will serve eight years in state prison for fatally stabbing a Montandon man last year. According to the Daily Item, 23 year-old Preston Robert Bennett, II, was sentenced Monday after a Northumberland County jury convicted him of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in the February 2024 death of 28-year-old Kyle Christensen. Prosecutors say the stabbing stemmed from a love triangle and Bennett’s threats against Christensen. Bennett apologized in court, saying he takes responsibility, but Judge Michael Toomey handed down the eight-year sentence, citing the seriousness of the crime.

MANUFACTURED HOUSING LAND RENT COULD INCREASE
Pennsylvania’s manufactured home owners are bracing for steep rent hikes as legislation aimed at capping increases remains under review in the state Senate. The bills would tie lot rent to the consumer price index while allowing additional increases for operating costs or repairs. Advocates say the measures are needed to protect seniors and families who own their homes but rent the land beneath them. Some area residents were recently notified their monthly rent will jump nearly 50 percent starting September first.
