ICE RAID IN SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents took five men into custody Thursday during a raid at a home on West Southern Avenue in South Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, witnesses say the men were seen working on the roof were detained and two others tried to flee by entering the house where they were working. Local police and fire crews assisted, and a ladder truck from the South Williamsport Fire Department was on the scene. It was reported that the men worked for the roofing company and suggest they may have been undocumented workers paid below standard rates. No injuries were reported.
SECOND SUSPECT IN CUSTODY OVER FIREARMS THEFT
A second suspect has been arrested in the June 6 burglary at the National Range and Armory in Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, Williamsport police say 18-year-old Tahir Dixon was charged with multiple felonies, including burglary and theft, after two rifles were stolen. Dixon, who was out on bail for a prior shooting case, allegedly used a brick in a failed attempt to break a window before another suspect smashed it with a cinder block to enter the business. Dixon is free on $50,000 bail. Another suspect, Shamier Gadson of Philadelphia, remains jailed and four juveniles were also reportedly involved.
CELL PHONE POLICY SET FOR LEWISBURG
At Thursday night’s Lewisburg Area School Board meeting, officials approved new cellphone rules for high school students, requiring devices to be kept out of sight during class. According to the Daily Item, school officials said the policy aims to curb distractions, after 94% of teachers reported phones interfere with learning. Phones will still be allowed during lunch, study hall, and hallway transitions with repeated violations possibly leading to confiscation and parental pickup. A full classroom ban could follow if the new rules don’t work.
WWII TRIBUTE IN BERWICK THIS WEEKEND
History comes alive this weekend in Berwick at the annual WWII Weekend at Test Track Park on South Eaton Street. According to a press release, the three-day event kicks off today and features reenactments, living history camps, food, and a special tribute to veterans. FUGITIVE FROM DAUPHIN COUNTY CAUGHT IN WILLIAMSPORT
A 25-year-old fugitive wanted by Harrisburg police was caught yesterday after jumping from a rooftop on Cherry Street in Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, city police say the man ran through several backyards before being tackled and tased while he resisted arrest. He was first taken to police headquarters, then transported to UPMC Williamsport for evaluation. The man, who had been on the run for months on felony fleeing charges, has not yet been publicly identified.
ELDERLY MAN SCAMMED BY FAKE CABLE REPRESENTATIVE
A 75-year-old man from Howard was recently scammed out of almost 600 dollars by someone posing on the phone as an Xfinity representative. According to State Police at Rockview, investigators say the scammer offered a fake discount and convinced the victim to buy two $280 Target gift cards, then got them to read the codes over the phone. The phone numbers used are now inactive and untraceable. Officials say the victim’s bank reimbursed the loss. Anyone with information about those responsible for the scam or any other related information is urged to contact state police at 814-355-7545.
LAPTOPS AVAILBLE FOR PA RESIDENTS THANKS TO FEDERAL GRANT
Eighty-five laptops are headed to job seekers in Lycoming and Union counties, thanks to a federal grant awarded to Advance Central PA thanks to a program established by the U.S. Department of Treasury. According to a press release by Senator Gene Yaw, the devices, funded through the Capital Projects Fund, will help individuals, especially in rural areas, access training, search for jobs, and stay connected. Provided at no cost, the laptops support digital literacy and high-speed internet use for work and education. The initiative is part of a $279 million investment to expand tech access across Pennsylvania.
BOOK WALK COMING TO TROUT RUN PARK
A new way to promote literacy and outdoor fun is coming to Trout Run Park. The Lycoming County Library System will unveil its first permanent Book Walk at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 25. According to North Central PA dot com, the project, funded by a local grant, features a bilingual children’s story displayed page-by-page along a walking path. Officials say it’s a big boost for Lewis Township families who live far from a library. The debut story is Otto and the Sun. The Book Walk is free, open year-round, and encourages reading, exercise, and community connection.
