SUSPECT ARRESTED IN MILTON OVER INFANT DEATH
A Milton man has been accused of helping to conceal the death of a newborn. According to the Sun Gazette, police report that 29-year-old Donan Mardaga buried the body of a 3-day-old baby girl in a backyard after a 14-year-old gave birth inside a home on Center Street without medical help. The teen is hospitalized and told authorities that the infant had trouble breathing and was placed in a dresser drawer. Milton police recovered the body after securing a search warrant. Mardaga faces multiple misdemeanor charges and is being held on $75,000 bail. An autopsy for the infant is scheduled for Thursday in Allentown.
GEORGIA MAN IN CUSTODY FOR KCSD SCAM
A major theft rocked the Keystone Central School District, with nearly $900,000 stolen in a financial scheme. Authorities say 52-year-old Dimiriafor Amamkwe of Atlanta accessed the district’s accounts last October and tried to flee the country. He was arrested at the Atlanta Airport and extradited back to Clinton County last week. Most of the stolen funds were recovered. Amamkwe faces multiple felony charges and is being held without bail ahead of a preliminary hearing set for August 4.
NEW CENTRAL PA BANK MERGER ON THE TABLE
A major regional bank merger is moving forward in Central Pennsylvania. According to the Daily Item, Mifflinburg Bancorp and Northumberland Bancorp have secured all regulatory approvals to finalize their merger by August 1. The combined institution will operate as Central Penn Bank & Trust under a new holding company, Steele Bancorp Inc. The full-service commercial bank reports over $1.3 billion in assets, and plans to maintain a strong presence in more than a dozen communities across the region, including Lewisburg, Sunbury, and Selinsgrove.
FLOATING CLASSROOM ON THE HIAWATHA TO START THIS MONTH
The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association is setting sail once again with its popular Floating Classroom series aboard the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat. According to the Daily Item, the hands-on, family-friendly programs run Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m., starting July 8 through mid-October. Topics range from water quality testing to local wildlife like ducks and owls. Each session departs from Susquehanna State Park in Williamsport. Space is limited and registration is required. MAN DIES IN FATAL TRACTOR ACCIDENT
An 81-year-old Clinton County man was found deceased after going missing in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River on Wednesday. According to WNEP, State Police say Adam Waltz of Westport was last seen around 11:30 a.m. near Renovo Road in Noyes Township. Police discovered his partially submerged tractor around 3 p.m. in the river. Multiple agencies, including Renovo Water Rescue, Lock Haven Fire, and a state police helicopter, searched for several hours before locating and recovering his body. The incident remains under investigation.
SOUTHSIDE MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT AND STRANGULATION
A South Williamsport man has been incarcerated after allegedly trying to strangle his ex-girlfriend during a violent encounter late Tuesday night. According to the Sun Gazette, police reports say 40-year-old Juan Jose Tolentino attacked the woman inside a vehicle on Hastings Street after 10pm. The victim told officers she nearly lost consciousness, and police observed evidence of abuse. Tolentino was apprehended a few blocks away from the scene and now faces felony charges, including aggravated assault and strangulation. He remains jailed on $35,000 bail.
HIGH HONOR FOR FORMER MOUNT CARMEL FIREFIGHTER
A Mount Carmel native has received the highest honor from the New York City Fire Department. According to the News Item, 47 year old Mike Kotzo, was awarded the FDNY’s Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr. Medal for heroic rope rescues during a deadly Harlem fire in February. Kotzo, who is a former volunteer with Mount Carmel’s Anthracite Fire Company, scaled to the roof and lowered two trapped residents to safety during the rescue. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker called his actions “deliberate and courageous.” Kotzo says he’s proud to represent his hometown roots.
AMERICAN HONEY QUEEN TO GIVE TALK AT THE TABER
Williamsport residents can take a closer look at the world of honeybees later this month. The Thomas T. Taber Museum will host 2025 American Honey Queen Cheyenne Bastian-Brown on Sunday, July 20 at 2 p.m. Her free public lecture, “Honeybees – Angels of Agriculture,” explores the role of bees in food production and U.S. agriculture. Bastian-Brown, a Penn State grad from Ralston, is a national spokesperson for the American Beekeeping Federation. Admission to the museum will also be free during the society program.
