STABBING AT EAST THIRD STREET HOTEL SUNDAY
State police were called to an East Third street hotel Sunday for a welfare check after reports of an altercation between two residents at Liberty Lodge before 5pm. According to Pennsylvania State police, 52 year old Shannon Bowes of Loyalsock Township, was allegedly stabbed for an unknown reason by 46 year old Robert Bohart. The two were in nearby rooms and did not know each other before there was an alleged confrontation between them. The Lycoming County Coroner’s Office was called to the property where Bowes was declared deceased before he was transported to the ER. PA State Police have charged Bohart with criminal homicide and bail was denied. State police are continuing the investigation.
FIREFIGHTER OVERCOME IN COAL TOWNSHIP
A Coal Township firefighter was rescued after he collapsed while on the roof of a burning row home on Mohawk Street last Thursday. According to the News Item, fire crews said the blaze started in the basement of the building, and that visibility was low at the scene from the smoke. A Rapid Intervention Team from Kulpmont was called in when the man was overcome, but he was safely brought down from the roof with a harness and ladder and EMTs treated him for heat exhaustion. He is expected to recover. Coal Township Fire authorities say two families and three children were displaced by the fire that is still under investigation.
WAITING LIST FOR SECTION 8 APPLICATIONS TO OPEN UP
The Section 8 waiting list will be opened up by the Lycoming County Housing Authority next month so the pool of applicants can be increased. According to the Sun Gazette, May 12th families will be able to be added to the list to replace those who have left the program through attrition. 800 applications is the limit and the waiting list will be closed once it reaches that limit or by May 26th. There are only 430 on the waiting list at this time. Section 8 Housing is a program that allows eligible participants a Housing Choice Voucher in order to lease qualified properties in the private rental market.
BRIDGE REPLACEMENT IN TROUT RUN
Expect a bridge replacement project next week on Route 14 in Trout Run. According to PennDOT, starting April 28th, the contractor will begin road work during daylight hours, including mobilization of materials and equipment. Severe flooding in August 2024 caused extensive damage to the Route 14 bridge that spanned Trout Run. Temporary signals that were placed in the fall of 2024 will remain in place for the duration of the project.
HANDICAPPED COUPLE ESCAPE HOUSE FIRE
An Old Lycoming Township couple who are each confined to wheelchairs were able to escape a fire at their home at 1932 Laconic St Saturday night. According to the Sun Gazette, Deborah and Ronnie Wells said the fire may have been caused by a propane tank explosion after they heard a large boom on their porch just before 11pm. City and township fire crews called a second alarm and Loyalsock, DuBoistown, Hepburn Township and Montoursville cr3ews arrived on the scene. They were able to control the blaz in about 30 minutes and save the other side of the rented duplex. The Wells’ were taken to UPMC Williamsport. Damage estimates to their home reached 50 thousand dollars. A state police fire marshal was on the scene yesterday.
FLEMINGTON WOMAN ARRESTED FOR PLANNED DRUG DELIVERY
Police have arrested a Clinton County woman after she allegedly sold meth to a confidential informant in February and recently attempted to have a package of drugs delivered to the address of an elderly resident. According to North Central PA dot com, state police they were informed that 37 year old Jennifer Smith, was expecting a package of methamphetamine, and they replaced the drugs she was expecting with a fake substance. After Smith retrieved the package and took it to her home in Flemington, a search warrant was executed and she was apprehended and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Smith remains jailed and has a court appearance today.
STATE POLICE CRASH DATA FROM EASTER WEEKEND
PA State police have released the data on their Easter holiday enforcement last weekend as part of its ongoing commitment to public safety. According to a press release, from April 18 to April 20, there were 532 total crashes investigated, including six fatalities. Troopers responded to 95 crashes involving injuries. Intoxicated driving was a factor in 45 crashes. Troopers arrested 282 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and issued 11,138 traffic citations. Compared to 2024 Easter weekend data, there were 10 less DUI related crashes and deaths reported this year.
HUSKY STATUES TO BE PLACED ON BLOOMSBURG CAMPUS
One point nine million dollars has been gifted by alumni for four bronze Husky statues to be installed at Bloomsburg University to symbolize Husky pride, support the arts and beautify the campus. According to North Central PA dot com, the donation from Bloomsburg University alumni Steph and Allie Pettit is in addition to the Pettits’ recent $6 million gift to establish a campus center for the arts. All four Husky statues will be created by renowned sculptor Joshua Koffman.
