GRANT FOR TRAFFIC LIGHT NEAR FUTURE WAWA ON SOUTHSIDE
A state grant to install a traffic light in South Williamsport on Route 15 near Fairmont Avenue will also improve traffic flow ahead of an expected Wawa gas station at the site of the former Kings Motel across from Little League’s museum and gift shop. According to the Sun Gazette, South Williamsport officials say the new traffic light will slow the northbound traffic on Route 15 and improve the public safety. The more than 390 thousand dollar grant is part of a million dollars in grant money from the Commonwealth Financing Authority or CFA which also provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure a safe and reliable system of transportation is available in the Commonwealth.
WILLIAMSPORT MAN GUILTY OF SEX TRAFFICKING CONSPIRACY
A 40 year old man from Williamsport was found guilty yesterday in Lycoming County court for conspiracy of trafficking individuals, unlawful contact with minors and other charges from incidents in 2023. According to the Sun Gazette, Allen Arthur Frazier testified that he and two other men would spend time offering drugs to and requesting sex from the 12 year old victim and on other occasions also from her 16 year old sister. The girls told their mother about the incidents and police began the investigation. Frazier will be sentenced June 3rd .
FEDERAL FUNDS RELEASED FOR PA PROJECTS
Over 2 billion dollars in federal funds have been released after the Shapiro administration filed a lawsuit for a release of the money earmarked for plugging abandoned wells, cleaning waterways, and preventing sinkholes. According to the administration, the halted infrastructure and environmental projects will resume in Pennsylvania. The unfreezing of funds comes after unsuccessful negotiations and multiple court orders demanded the funds’ release.
SPONGY MOTH PREVENTION
Land and woodlot owners in Pennsylvania are encouraged to plan for spongy moth treatment to protect trees from severe damage this upcoming year. According to DCNR, populations of Spongy Moth populations have reached outbreak levels the past three years, leading to widespread defoliation. Pennsylvania forests are more than 70 percent privately owned. DCNR plans to treat approximately 75,000 acres, primarily in northeastern and central Pennsylvania, and the PA Game Commission plans to treat approximately 38,000 acres with limited aerial applications. THEFT OF COPPER WIRE IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY
State police at Milton are seeking a suspect in the theft of copper wire earlier this month. According to North Central PA dot com, two thousand dollars-worth of copper wire was taken from a site in Northumberland County on February 11th in the overnight hours. The 500 foot roll of wire owned by SG, Inc., of Manassas, Va was in a locked steel container at a site at the 2900 block of Shakespeare Road in West Chillisquaque Township. MAN ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE IN WILLIAMSPORT
A Williamsport man was taken into custody following a domestic disturbance February 12th after the woman inside a home at the 400 block of Pearson Street said he was drunk and banging on the front door to be let in. According to Montoursville State police, they approached 22 year old Alexander Knight, who was on the girlfriend’s porch and refused to obey commands, allegedly punched one of the officers in the face while he was taken into custody. At the barracks, Knight allegedly spit on the officers. Knight was charged with three counts of summary harassment, two felony counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer and was jailed initially in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail which was then changed to non-monetary. Knight’s formal arraignment is scheduled for March 24th.
COUNTY LOOKING TO REPLACE LEWISBURG WATER TOWER
In a proactive effort to replace Union County’s water cooling tower at the government center before the heart of the summer hits, officials are seeking proposals for its replacement. According to the Daily Item, the county says parts of the unit and the filters are worn out so replacement of the 25-year-old tower is a better option than replacing parts and they hope to do that before June of this year. Seven HVAC units at the government center are in the process of being installed after Energy Technologies, of Drums, was awarded the bid. The water cooling tower is located at 155 N. 15th Street in Lewisburg
SULLIVAN COUNTY TRAP SHOOTERS COMPETE
Two young women from the Sullivan County Shooting Team competed in Florida last weekend and one was named to the national team after taking a gold medal in the 2025 Trap Spring Selection Match in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to the Sun Gazette, Lucy Myers, a freshman at Liberty University earned a spot in the final by scoring 200 out of 250 in the women’s open and the junior final. Sullivan County shooting team member, Addison Strausser is a 17-year-old senior at Hughesville also competed with Myers in Florida.
