WILLIAMSPORT MAN CHARGED WITH ARSON
A Williamsport man is facing serious charges after police say he set a fire inside an apartment building. Fifty-five-year-old Michael Eugene Cover was arrested late Wednesday at a high-rise on West Fourth Street. Investigators say he set debris on fire in a third-floor hallway, trapping a neighbor inside their apartment. The fire was quickly put out and no one was hurt, but officials say the situation could have turned catastrophic. Cover is now jailed on 150 thousand dollars bail on multiple charges, including arson.

A Limestone Township man is facing charges after an incident inside UPMC Williamsport. Police say 22-year-old Karter John Peacock was in the emergency room for a mental health evaluation when he allegedly punched a state trooper as handcuffs were being removed. A second trooper used a taser to subdue him. Authorities say the trooper reported a shoulder injury. Peacock is now charged with assault, resisting arrest, and harassment, and is being held on $50,000 bail.
COMMS SAY THEY HAD NO INPUT OVER JULY 4TH CANCELLATION
Lycoming County commissioners are responding after the City of Williamsport announced the cancellation of the Fourth of July celebration in the city. Commissioners say they had no role in the decision and were not consulted. Commissioner Marc Sortman says the county has taken criticism despite having no involvement. Officials are now urging city leaders to reconsider, especially with the nation’s 250th anniversary approaching. They say they’re willing to help find a way to bring the celebration back.
FORUM TO DISCUSS PRIMARY ELECTION ELIGIBILITY
A public forum in Lewisburg will focus on expanding voting access in Pennsylvania. The Union County Democratic Committee is hosting a discussion Saturday from 1 to 2:30 at the Public Library for Union County. The forum will examine a proposal to allow independent voters to participate in primary elections. State Representative Jared Solomon, a co-sponsor of the legislation, will take part. Organizers say the conversation will highlight the rise in unaffiliated voters and concerns that closed primaries limit participation, especially among younger voters.
SWATTING INCIDENT CAUSES UNECCESSARY EMERGENCY
Authorities are investigating a swatting incident that prompted a major emergency response in Northumberland County. District Attorney Michael O’Donnell says multiple agencies responded Wednesday night to a reported shooting at a home in Point Township. Investigators later determined the call was false and say there is no threat to the public. Officials warn swatting is a serious crime that can lead to dangerous situations and will be prosecuted when suspects are identified.
WOMAN CHARGED AFTER FIGHTING ABOUT DOCUMENTS
A Selinsgrove woman is facing charges after a dispute turned threatening in Snyder County. State police say Lynne Kratzer allegedly threatened another woman during an argument over documents, including a will and deed, along Old 522 in Middlecreek Township. Troopers say she made punching gestures toward the victim before being ordered to leave the residence. The victim, a 48-year-old woman from Middleburg, was not injured. Charges have been filed through the district court.
DISCUSSIONS CONTINUE IN PA OVER DATA CENTER INVESTMENTS
A new digital economy could be taking shape in Pennsylvania, driven by the growth of data centers. Leaders speaking recently at a Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber event say these facilities are critical for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and logistics, but also place major demands on the power grid. According to the Sun Gazette, officials say the challenge will be balancing economic growth with energy supply and affordability, as the state works to compete with other regions attracting large-scale data center investments.
COURT DECIDES PENN STATE MUST DISCLOSE FINANCIALS
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has denied Penn State’s request to block the release of internal trustee documents. The decision means Penn State must turn over records tied to a 2022 trustees retreat and committee meeting, as well as unredacted financial documents. The ruling upholds earlier decisions siding with Spotlight PA and reinforces public access under the state’s Right-to-Know Law. Advocates say the move is a win for transparency and accountability.
