FEDERAL DRUG AND GUN CHARGES FOR TROUT RUN MAN
A Lycoming County man is facing federal charges for alleged drug trafficking. Police say Robert E. Confer Jr., of Trout Run, was indicted on charges including possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine, along with multiple firearms offenses. Prosecutors say the charges stem from an October incident, with a related case still active in Centre County. Officials say he also has prior convictions in Clinton and Lycoming counties.
TWO TO BE EXTRIDICTED TO NORRY FOR EBT SKIMMING DEVICE SCAM
Two suspects accused of placing a skimming device at a Milton convenience store will be extradited to face charges in Northumberland County. Police say Patricia Bogdan and George Lazar installed a Bluetooth-enabled device at a 7-Eleven on Race Street to steal EBT card data. The device remained in place for several days before being discovered. Authorities say the suspects were arrested in New Jersey and may be tied to a larger organized crime operation spanning multiple states.
PA DEP FINES EUREKA OVER 2025 SPILL
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has fined Eureka Resources after a major waste spill in Williamsport. The agency issued 100 thousand dollars in civil penalties for violations at facilities in Williamsport and Bradford County. Officials say about 16 thousand gallons of oil and gas liquid waste spilled from a tank last August, with some reaching the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Investigators found faulty alarms and improper storage of more than a million gallons of waste. Cleanup is ongoing, but DEP says the company remains in violation and could face further enforcement if issues aren’t resolved.
BRADFORD COUNTY BRIDGE WILL REMAIN CLOSED THROUGH REPAIRS
Repairs are moving forward on the damaged Wyalusing River Bridge after last week’s crash. PennDOT says the bridge , also known as the Rainbow Bridge, will remain closed after an oversized tractor-trailer hauling an excavator struck the structure on March 24, damaging several steel supports. The repair cost is estimated at around $1 million, with work expected to wrap up by the end of June. Crews plan to begin repairs April 13, and PennDOT says it will seek reimbursement from the trucking company. A detour remains in place using Routes 6 and 187.
MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER ARMED STANDOFF WITH TRUCK DRIVER
A Shamokin man is behind bars after police say he tried to steal a truck at gunpoint. According to the Daily Item, Gary Bakley, was arraigned and jailed on $75,000 bail, facing robbery and theft charges. Investigators say the incident happened around 4 a.m. March 16 outside a Turkey Hill on North Second Street, where Bakley allegedly threatened to shoot the driver if he didn’t hand over his keys. The victim instead pulled out his own firearm, prompting Bakley to back off. Police later tracked him down and took him into custody without further incident.
STABBING VICTIM SOUGHT BY POLICE IN SUNBURY
Police in Sunbury continue the investigation into a possible stabbing after a disturbing scene was found inside a Court Street home. Officers responded to a 911 hang-up call early Saturday morning and discovered a bloody knife outside and blood throughout the home, including on floors, counters, and walls. Three men were taken into custody, including one with a visible injury, but no victim was found at the scene. REOPENING OF CABINETWORKS FACILITY COULD BRING BACK JOBS
A major boost could be on the way for Union County’s workforce. John Brothers Holdings has acquired the former Cabinetworks facility in Mifflinburg, which shut down last December and left about 175 people out of work. According to the Daily Item, the 300 thousand -square-foot plant will reopen as John Brothers Wood Products, focusing on manufacturing building components like trusses and millwork. Company leaders say they’re already working to upgrade the facility and plan to begin hiring, with hopes of bringing jobs back to the community and strengthening the local economy.
MILESTONE REACHED AS PA FIGHTS THE OPIOID CRISIS
The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs has reached a major milestone, announcing 100 partner organizations in its Overdose Prevention Program. These partners distribute naloxone and drug testing strips across the state to help prevent fatal overdoses. Since 2023, more than 15 thousand overdoses have been reversed using state-supplied naloxone. Officials say the growing network is expanding access to life-saving resources and strengthening efforts to combat the opioid crisis statewide.
