FATAL SHOOTING IN WILLIAMSPORT
Williamsport police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Sunday morning. Officers were called around 12:30 a.m. to the 2200 block of Central Avenue, where they found a middle-aged man on a porch with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lycoming County coroner. Police say the suspected shooter was located at the scene and taken in for questioning. An autopsy is scheduled as the investigation continues.
FATAL HIT AND RUN ALONG ROUTE 220
State police have identified an 80-year-old woman killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Lycoming County. Investigators say Elsie Koch was walking along the southbound lane of Route 220 in Woodward Township early Saturday morning when she was struck by an unknown vehicle. Evidence shows the driver attempted to swerve but still hit Koch before continuing southbound. She was taken to UPMC Williamsport, where she later died. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police.
MUNCY TOWNSHIP LEGAL LEADERSHIP CHANGES
Muncy Township is seeing changes in its legal leadership after solicitor Timothy Schoonover confirmed his resignation Friday, effective immediately. The move comes one day after township supervisors voted to appoint Schoonover to the role, replacing a Williamsport law firm. During the same meeting, the board also approved a new zoning and codes officer. The solicitor appointment was not unanimous, with one supervisor raising concerns about the process. Township officials say the solicitor will provide legal guidance as development issues continue to move forward.
TREE CITY USA DESIGNATION FOR LEWISBURG
Lewisburg has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking its 41st consecutive year receiving the honor. Officials say the designation highlights the borough’s commitment to maintaining a healthy urban forest through tree care programs, ordinances and community involvement. The Shade Tree Commission works to preserve and plant trees while promoting sustainability and education. To celebrate, a public tree planting ceremony is planned for Arbor Day on April 24 at Meadow View Court.
TWO ALARM FIRE FOR VACANT HOME ON MEMORIAL AVENUE
Multiple emergency crews responded to a house fire Sunday night in Williamsport. Officials say the blaze broke out just before 9 p.m. at a vacant home along Memorial Avenue, with flames visible from multiple sides of the structure when crews arrived. The fire was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in additional units from several neighboring departments. Downed live power lines added to the danger for firefighters. Crews were able to get the bulk of the fire under control within about 20 minutes.
MAN WITH WARRANTS IN NEW JERSEY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CITY
A man wanted in New Jersey on charges involving a minor is now in custody in Lycoming County. Police say officers responded to a disturbance on Catherine Drive, where they identified one of the individuals as Nicholas Reillo, who had two active warrants. Authorities say the warrants were for a probation violation and an obscenity charge involving a minor. Reillo was taken into custody without incident and is now being held in Lycoming County Prison on $100,000 bail.
SUSPECTS IN MINK-RELEASE CASE TO FACE TRIAL IN MAY
Two out-of-state suspects accused of releasing hundreds of mink from a Northumberland County fur farm are set to go to trial next month. Jury selection for Christopher Legere and Cara Mitrano is scheduled for May 11, with the trial beginning May 12. Prosecutors say the pair released more than 600 mink from the farm in 2024, causing significant financial losses. One felony charge has already been dismissed, and both defendants remain free on bail as the case moves forward.
CONSTRUCTION STARTS AGAIN ON I-80 NEAR DANVILLE
A multi-year construction project is set to resume this week along Interstate 80 between Danville and Limestoneville. PennDOT says crews will begin bridge repairs over Mexico Road, Chillisquaque Creek and Klondike Road, along with removing temporary barriers and pavement markings. Drivers should expect alternating lane restrictions Sunday through Friday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The more than 53-million-dollar project includes reconstruction and resurfacing work and is expected to continue through 2027.
