MAN ACCUSED OF STABBING CHANGES PLEA JUST BEFORE TRIAL
A Williamsport man has pleaded guilty in a violent stabbing at the Third Street River Valley Trade and Transit Center. Thirty-seven-year-old Timothy Maddox admitted to two counts of aggravated assault just before his trial was set to begin. Prosecutors say the December 2023 attack left one man with a stab wound to the abdomen and a woman with multiple serious injuries, including a punctured lung and liver damage. According to the Sun Gazette, Maddox told the court he acted over feeling threatened but he changed his plea because he wanted to take responsibility. He remains in custody awaiting sentencing in May.
MAN IN CUSTODY FOR AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AFTER HIGH SPEED CHASE
A Pittston man is facing serious charges after a high-speed crash in Lycoming County left a volunteer firefighter critically injured. State police say 21-year-old Tyler Purkey was driving up to 95 miles per hour while passing in a no-passing zone on Route 118 near Lairdsville in January when his pickup slammed head-on into another vehicle. The driver, fire chief Raymond Lunger, suffered a brain bleed and multiple injuries but has since been released and is recovering. Purkey is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle and was released on bail pending a hearing.
WATER ISSUE STILL LOOMING AT SNYDER COUNTY JAIL
Snyder County officials are working to address a months-long water issue at the former county jail near Selinsgrove. About a dozen corrections employees have been working at the site without running water since a leak shut down the line in December. The county plans to meet with the state Department of Human Services to discuss solutions, including replacing the line or drilling a new well. Costs could range from 20 thousand to more than 200 thousand dollars. Meanwhile, the county is moving forward with plans to relocate operations to a new booking center in Middleburg.

Borough leaders say community input is key to shaping the final recommendations. Those interested can register for the meeting through the borough’s website lewisburgborough.org.
FIRE IN MOUNT CARMEL RULED ARSON
A weekend fire that tore through a Mount Carmel building is now being investigated as arson. State police say an accelerant was used to ignite the blaze inside the former Columbia Building Supply on South Spruce Street. The two-alarm fire broke out Sunday night and quickly spread through the three-story structure, fueled by strong winds and building materials inside. Nearby homes were evacuated and suffered some damage. Crews from multiple counties responded, bringing the fire under control later that night. The criminal investigation is now being handled by Mount Carmel police.

ETHICS CONCERNS OVER STACY GARRITY’S SPENDING
Ethics concerns are being raised after Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity attended a gala hosted by a firm tied to a major state investment. Garrity has directed about 45 million dollars in taxpayer funds into Israel Bonds since 2023. According to Spotlight PA, she attended a thank-you event hosted by the firm, paying for her ticket with campaign funds, saying it crossed into political activity. Some ethics experts say the move raises questions about the line between official duties and campaigning. Garrity’s office maintains the investments are financially sound, while critics say the situation highlights the need for clear boundaries.
FIRST READING OVER DRESS CODE APPROVED
The Mount Carmel Area School Board has approved the first reading of a more relaxed dress code policy. The proposal passed by majority vote, with two members voting against it. If approved on a second reading, the changes would take effect for the 2026-27 school year. The new policy would allow dress-down attire every weekday instead of just Fridays, while keeping restrictions on items like ripped clothing and profanities. Officials say the change comes after months of feedback from students and parents requesting a more flexible dress code.
