EVENT FOR THE DISTRICT AT LYCOMING VALLEY WELL ATTENDED
Hundreds of people packed a public open house to learn more about redevelopment plans for the former Lycoming Mall, now The District at Lycoming Valley. Developers announced a 107-room Hilton hotel and Wawa will join Bass Pro Shops, and the mall will be demolished. Jason Fink, President and CEO of the Williamsport Lycoming Chamber of Commerce said that based on information given by the company, the growth has potential to be transformational in the community. In a statement, Terri Lauchle, chairman of the Muncy Township Board of Supervisors said they want to see progress and investment, as well as proper procedure, clear documentation and consistent application of the rules.
VICTIM IN A CAR FATALLY STRUCK BY A TRAIN IN HERNDON
A Lower Mahanoy Township man was killed Sunday afternoon when his vehicle was struck by a train in Northumberland County. State police say 74-year-old Darwin Whitmer of Dalmatia was attempting to cross railroad tracks at Railroad and Spruce streets in Herndon Borough around 12:40 p.m. when his Subaru Forester was hit by a Norfolk Southern train. Whitmer was not wearing a seat belt and died from his injuries.
OVERDOSE DEATHS DROPPING IN LYCOMING COUNTY
New data shows overdose deaths in Lycoming County have dropped by more than 62 percent since 2023, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Officials credit families, first responders, treatment providers and community partners for the progress. Still, Lycoming Regional Police warn the drug supply remains dangerous, often contaminated with fentanyl. Anyone who suspects an overdose should call 911 immediately, and confidential help is available locally.
4-H STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR LEADERSHIP
The Lycoming County 4-H County Council has earned a statewide County Council Award for 2025, marking the fifth time the teen leadership group has received the honor. Members set and achieved SMART goals focused on leadership development, community service and mentoring younger youth. Their projects included hosting workshops, supporting local charities and promoting 4-H across the community, showcasing dedication to service and skill-building.
YOUNG MAN THREATENS PEER ON INSTAGRAM
An 18-year-old Williamsport man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he used Instagram to threaten someone he believed was cooperating with law enforcement. Detectives say Kaden Zackery DeShong sent messages calling the victim a “rat,” warning he was “coming for” them, and using blood and coffin emojis. The victim reported feeling scared and intimidated. Police say the threats began a day after another teen was arrested on gun and marijuana charges in South Williamsport. DeShong is free on $15,000 unsecured bail.
MONTGOMERY MAN FACING INDECENT ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST A MINOR
A Montgomery man is behind bars facing multiple child sex-related charges. State police say 44-year-old Douglas Duane Hans is accused of having inappropriate contact with a minor on several occasions, including while she was sleeping, and allegedly offering her money for a sex act. He was arraigned on charges including indecent assault and promoting prostitution of a minor, and is jailed in Lycoming County on $150,000 bail.
FEDERAL FUNDING FOR TWO COUNTY PROJECTS
Two Valley projects are receiving a combined 2.5 million dollars in federal funding, according to Congressman Glenn Thompson. In Freeburg, Snyder County, 750-thousand dollars will help rehabilitate the borough’s sewer system and reduce overflows during heavy rain. In East Buffalo Township, Union County, 1.8 million dollars will fund pedestrian and traffic improvements along West Market Street, enhancing safety near businesses and Bucknell University.

Tyler Reddick is making NASCAR history. He held off Shane van Gisbergen at the Circuit of the Americas to become the first Cup Series driver to win the season’s first three races. Driving for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan, Reddick also won the Daytona 500 and Atlanta, celebrating with his team after the record-setting victory.
