FATAL ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIVES OF DUSHORE COUPLE
Members of the Dushore Volunteer Fire Company are mourning the loss of one of their own after a deadly crash in Bradford County. Authorities say 75-year-old former fire chief Frank Yonkin and his wife, Bonnie, 70, were killed instantly Tuesday afternoon when their car crossed the centerline on Route 220 and collided with a loaded dump truck near Harney Road. Investigators say the truck driver tried to avoid the crash, but couldn’t. The couple was wearing seat belts. State police in Towanda are investigating the accident.
TWO FACING CHARGES FOR STEALING COPPER
Two Jersey Shore residents are facing felony charges after police say they caused about $18,000 in damage to HVAC units at the Tiadaghton Inn. According to the Sun Gazette, Lycoming Regional Police allege 30-year-old Lee Winters and 53-year-old Janelle Bertin removed copper and scrap metal from two outdoor units early Friday morning, loading the materials into a shopping cart and taking them home. Surveillance video reportedly linked the pair to the theft. Winters was jailed on 40 thousand dollars bail, while Bertin was released on the same amount.
EV CHARGING STATION PROGRAM ROLLING OUT IN PA
PennDOT is rolling out the next phase of its electric vehicle charging expansion. The agency has launched the Community Phase of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure, or NEVI, program, distributing $100 million in federal funds to build public EV charging stations across Pennsylvania. The first round opens this spring in southeastern counties, with $34 million available. Statewide, Pennsylvania leads the nation with 29 NEVI-funded stations already built and dozens more in progress. Officials say the effort will expand neighborhood access and support cleaner transportation throughout the Commonwealth.
LIBRARY SUBSCRIPTION BOXES AVAILABLE THIS SPRING
The Montgomery Area Public Library is adding a new chapter of fun for readers this spring with the launch of free book subscription boxes. Each box includes one or two library books, along with surprise gifts tailored to the reader’s interests. The program is open to all ages, and patrons can sign up in person or request a form by email. Boxes will be available for pickup at the library on South Main Street in Montgomery. MAN CHARGED FOR THREATENING TO GET A GUN DURING FIGHT
A Watsontown man is facing charges after police say he threatened to shoot someone during a fight in Union County. Twenty-two-year-old Skylar Lewis Young is accused of confronting a man at a home in East Buffalo Township in October, then telling his girlfriend to get his gun during the altercation. Officers say the victim suffered minor injuries and a neighbor’s surveillance video captured the incident. Young is charged with terroristic threats, simple assault and related offenses. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 5.
MAN ARRESTED AFTER ASSAULT OF CHILD CAUGHT ON CAMERA
A 42-year-old man is jailed on 150 thousand dollars bail after police allege he assaulted a 4-year-old child inside his apartment on two occasions. According to the Sun Gazette, court documents show that Joseph Winfield is accused of striking and punching the child on Christmas Eve, and in a separate July incident knocking the child and a highchair to the floor. Police say both assaults were captured on a home security camera. Winfield faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
REAPPOINTMENT FOR MILLER
Brian Miller has been reappointed as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Chief U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann administered the oath Monday in Williamsport. Miller was first appointed in October for 120 days, and now will serve until President Donald Trump’s nominee is confirmed by the Senate. Miller was nominated by Trump in September, with confirmation still pending. He previously served as Special Inspector General for Pandemic Recovery and has held several senior roles in the Justice Department and White House, earning multiple national awards for his work as a federal prosecutor and government watchdog.
AMERICA250 PROGRAM AT EAGLE GRANGE
Eagle Grange Number One in Montgomery is launching its America250 programming with a special presentation on the Fair Play Men. Lycoming College historian Dr. Christopher Pearl will speak March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at historic Grange Hall, discussing the group of colonial settlers who reportedly drafted their own declaration of independence on July 4th, 1776. The public is invited to attend the free program, with refreshments served afterward.
