FATAL ACCIDENT IN KELLY TOWNSHIP
A 29-year-old Lewisburg man is dead following a single-vehicle crash Sunday night in Kelly Township, Union County. State Police say Matthew Eberly was a rear passenger in a car that failed to navigate a right-hand turn on Colonel John Kelly Road just before 9 p.m., striking a tree. The 18-year-old driver and front passenger were seriously injured and taken to hospitals. Eberly was pronounced dead at the scene.
HOMICIDE CASE HELD FOR COURT FOR FORMER FUGITIVE
After a court appearance Friday, Denarii Kadeem Springs is now headed toward formal arraignment on charges tied to the 2024 fatal shooting of Dayveon Creel near the Northumberland County Courthouse. According to North Central PA dot com, Springs had been on the run for more than 17 months before his arrest in Paterson, New Jersey,. He is being held without bail, with arraignment scheduled for March 30.
STAMM TO RESIGN FROM EAST LYCO IN JUNE
East Lycoming School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Stamm has announced his voluntary resignation, effective June 1, despite having 16 months remaining on his contract. In a letter to the school board, Stamm called serving the district one of the great privileges of his 29-year career in public education, including 15 years as a superintendent.
TAX PREP SOFTWARE OFFERED BY PA DEPT OF REVENUE
Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has launched a free pilot program called Fast File, offering eligible taxpayers a simpler way to file their state income tax return online. The program is designed for residents with straightforward returns, such as those with a single W-2 and no credits or deductions.. The filing deadline for 2025 state returns is April 15, 2026.
LOCAL HISTORIC CHURCH FOR SALE
St. John’s Reformed Church, one of Williamsport’s historic architectural landmarks, is now up for sale. It was Built in 1885 and later purchased by the nonprofit American Rescue Workers in 1977. The church survived a devastating 2007 fire and was restored. Its final service under ARW ownership is set for March 1.
DUI FOR MARION HEIGHTS WOMAN
Police in Shamokin say a Marion Heights woman was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when she caused a near head-on crash last month on Route 61. According to the News Item, Justine Haines, 60, is charged with DUI, reckless endangerment and reckless driving after officers say her blood-alcohol level measured .203 percent. Investigators say her white Lexus crossed into the path of an oncoming SUV near the Coal Township line. The other driver and his wife were not injured. Police report Haines showed signs of impairment and admitted leaving a bar.
LAYOFFS COMING TO WHITE DEER TREATMENT CENTER
White Deer Run Treatment Network near Allenwood will lay off 31 employees, according to a state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the Department of Labor and Industry. The Sun Gazette reports that the layoffs take effect April 5.
LAW DAY COMPETITION CEREMONY COMING IN MAY
The Lycoming Law Association has announced details for its 2026 Law Day Competition, inviting students across Lycoming County to submit essays or art projects centered on this year’s theme, “Rule of Law and the American Dream.” The annual event encourages students in public, private and homeschool programs to explore how the legal system shapes their communities and protects individual rights. Winners will be recognized during a Law Day ceremony May 1 at the Lycoming County Courthouse, where cash prizes will be awarded. More information is available at lycolaw.org.
LIBRARY BOOK DRIVE IN LEWISBURG
Degenstein Community Library is collecting gently used books next month to stock its annual sale. The Friends of the Library will host a book drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 7 at the library on South Fifth Street in Sunbury. Donations will help support the library’s big book sale set for May 14th through the 16th. Organizers ask that donors not include magazines, VHS tapes, encyclopedias, textbooks or books that are damaged or musty.

OLYMPIC NEWS
Team USA is back on top of the hockey world. The Americans defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime Sunday to win their first Olympic men’s hockey gold medal since 1980.
* In overtime, Jack Hughes buried the game-winner off a pass from Zach Werenski.
* Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck delivered a historic performance, stopping 41 of 42 shots.
* Following the victory, the team honored the late Johnny Gaudreau by bringing his children onto the ice for the celebration.
*Hilary Knight, who captained Team USA to a gold medal in women’s hockey, led the entire U.S. delegation as flag-bearer in the closing ceremony.
* The Americans came away with 33 total medals, second only to Norway and just ahead of host country Italy.
* The twin Olympic cauldrons in Milan and Cortina were extinguished during last night’s ceremony and the torch handed off to the French Alps, the site of the 2030 Winter Games.
