PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY FOR CAPTURED FUGITIVE
An accused murderer is set to appear for a preliminary hearing at the Northumberland County Courthouse in Sunbury. According to the Daily Item, Denarii Springs will be in court today at 9:15 a.m., with heavy security expected and possible traffic delays in downtown Sunbury . Springs was extradited from New Jersey last week after more than 500 days on the run. He’s accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Dayveon Creel in 2024 during a lunch break in an attempted homicide trial. Springs faces first-degree murder charges and is being held without bail.
MORE CHARGES IN WILLIAMSPORT FOR FELON WITH A STASH OF GUNS
A convicted felon in Williamsport is facing new charges after police say a sealed box of guns was discovered at a home he was prohibited from visiting under a protection from abuse order. The protected individual contacted the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office after finding the firearms. Police seized a shotgun and two rifles from the Market Street residence on January 30th. Malik Carroll Poletol, who has prior felony convictions in Virginia, is charged with illegal possession of a firearm and is being held at the Lycoming County Prison on $50,000 bail.
FEES GOING UP FOR SEWER TAP-IN IN MOUNT CARMEL
Mount Carmel Township supervisors have approved a significant increase in sewer tap-in fees. The board voted 3-0 to raise the fee for new connections from $500 to $2,700, citing rising engineering and infrastructure costs. According to the News item, officials say the new rate is in line with neighboring authorities. Meanwhile, supervisors plan to revise a zoning overlay ordinance related to potential data center development on a 450-acre coal tract. They say no formal plans have been submitted, and any future proposals would be made public and go through a full review process.
THON IS THIS WEEKEND IN STATE COLLEGE
Penn State’s 2026 THON Weekend is here! The Bryce Jordan Center will be full from 6 p.m. tonight through 4 p.m. Sunday. More than 700 dancers are expected to stand for 46 hours to raise money for Four Diamonds in the fight against childhood cancer. Admission is free and open to the public, but attendees must obtain a wristband and follow the clear bag policy. Free parking will be available in designated campus lots, and a livestream will be offered for those unable to attend. A full spectator resource packet is available at THON.org.
MAN ARRESTED AFTER THREATENING BAR PATRONS
A 21-year-old man is facing charges after police say he threatened patrons outside a Lewisburg bar and claimed he had a gun. Buffalo Valley Regional Police responded around 1 a.m. January 4th to a disturbance in the area. Officers say Christopher John Treshock of Elysburg was intoxicated, belligerent and repeatedly returned after being asked to leave. Witnesses told police he made comments referencing a 9mm handgun and gestured as if reaching for one, though no weapon was found. He’s charged with terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. A preliminary hearing is set for March 5th.
MIFFLINBURG POLICE CHIEF RESIGNING
Mifflinburg Police Chief Jeffrey Hackenburg has submitted his resignation to borough council. Hackenburg is expected to end his tenure Friday. According to The Daily Item, he has accepted a part-time position as a public safety specialist with Lexipol Consulting, working on a pilot program aimed at introducing new products to first responders. Hackenburg was reappointed as chief in January and received a five percent raise prior to announcing his resignation.
WILLIAMSPORT WOMAN PICKED FOR STATE SPECIAL OLYMPICS POSITION
The Special Olympics of Pennsylvania has appointed Williamsport resident M. Feif Gallagher to its State Board of Directors. Gallagher brings more than 30 years of senior leadership experience in the financial sector, along with decades of volunteer service in the Special Olympics movement. She was honored last year with the Ann Grunert Lifetime Achievement Award. In her new role, Gallagher will help guide strategy and statewide initiatives supporting thousands of athletes and families across the Commonwealth. Officials say her leadership and long-standing commitment to inclusive sports will strengthen the organization’s mission.
