SEX OFFENDER FAILED TO REGISTER NEW ADDRESS
A Union County man is facing charges for allegedly failing to update his address on the state’s Megan’s Law registry. Police say 39-year-old Shane Michael Doane listed a Lewisburg address but was actually living in Mifflinburg with his girlfriend. Troopers learned he had not lived at the registered address since 2023. Doane, previously convicted of unlawful contact with a minor, now faces felony charges. Bail is set at $20,000 with a preliminary hearing scheduled today.
NEW DIRECTIVES HAVE MUNCY TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS UNDER SCRUTINY
Controversy is growing in Muncy Township as supervisors face criticism over transparency and free speech policies. According to the Sun Gazette, the board recently directed the police chief and other employees to limit public comments and raise concerns internally, a move media law experts say raises First Amendment questions. At the same time, business leaders, including from the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber, accuse the board of improper meeting procedures and delaying action on major development projects like the former Lycoming Mall site. Supervisors say their actions are meant to ensure neutrality and maintain public confidence.
NEW GREENWAY INITIATIVE SEEKING COUNTY PARTNERS
SEDA-Council of Governments is exploring a multi-county greenway planning initiative in the region. Montour County commissioners have already expressed interest, while discussions are underway with Columbia, Snyder and Northumberland counties. Funding is available through the state’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program, with grants up to 250 thousand dollars requiring a 15 percent local match. SEDA-COG says it would assist counties with grant writing and coordination.
HOST FAMILIES WANTED FOR CROSSCUTTERS 2026 SEASON
The Williamsport Crosscutters are now accepting applications for host families for the 2026 season. The club says host families play a key role in helping players ages 17 to 23 adjust to a new environment during the season, which runs from June 2 through September 1. Families who participate receive season tickets, on-field recognition and other perks. The upcoming season will also mark the 100th anniversary of Historic Bowman Field, featuring 41 home games. RENOVO MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT
A Renovo man is facing charges after state police say he assaulted a woman during a domestic incident. Troopers responded February 11th, to Fifth Street and found 44-year-old Heath Braunns and a 37-year-old woman who showed an injury to her left eye, allegedly caused by Braunns striking her. He was taken to the Clinton County Jail and charged with simple assault and harassment. Court records show Braunns has two prior guilty pleas for simple assault in separate counties. He was released on 15 thousand dollars unsecured bail, with a preliminary hearing set for February 23.
FORMER DIRECTOR OF FOOD PANTRY SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON
A former Lycoming County food pantry director is headed to state prison. Fifty-two-year-old Shawn Coles, formerly known as Gawblick, was sentenced to 11 and a half to 24 months after pleading guilty to stealing more than 40 thousand dollars from the Footprints of Montgomery food pantry. Prosecutors say she misused funds for personal expenses between 2021 and 2024. In a victim impact statement, the nonprofit detailed financial hardship and loss of trust. Coles must also serve five years of probation and pay restitution.
WASD SCHOOL BOARD SEEKING TO FILL VACANCY
The Williamsport Area School Board is preparing to fill a vacancy following the resignation of member Thomas Adams, who is moving out of the district. According to the Sun gazette, Former board member Barbara Reeves has been placed on next month’s agenda as a possible replacement. Reeves was previously appointed in 2018 and later elected. If approved, she could be sworn in at the March 17th meeting.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARTS STUDENTS IN SHAMOKIN
Artisan Alley is offering a scholarship opportunity for seniors at Shamokin Area and Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High Schools. The award will go to a student active in the arts who has been accepted to a post-secondary school and completes an application through their guidance office. The scholarship is funded through an annual art and basket raffle and a food sale set for March 21 at the Shamokin Knights of Columbus. Organizers say they’re proud to support local student artists.
