SUSPECT IN CUSTODY AFTER SHOOTING IN MONTOURSVILLE
A 43-year-old man charged in a Montoursville Borough shooting is now in Lycoming County Prison. State Police say Johnnie Drummond was arraigned February 11th and bail was denied. Police were called Tuesday night for a welfare check on Jordan Avenue and heard a gunshot after making contact inside the home. A perimeter was set and tactical teams responded. Officers later entered the residence, where they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds and took Drummond into custody. The victim remains in critical condition at UPMC.
ELECTRIC RATES GOING UP IN WATSONTOWN
Watsontown residents will soon see higher electric bills for the first time in 12 years after borough council approved a new rate ordinance. The change restructures billing into four categories and raises residential rates by about nine percent per kilowatt hour. According to the Standard Journal, borough officials say rising electric supply costs and increased demand on the power grid prompted the increase. A household using one thousand kilowatt hours per month could see its bill rise by nearly twenty dollars
CURSIVE TO BE REQUIRED NOW IN PA SCHOOLS
Pennsylvania schools will now be required to teach cursive writing. Governor Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 17, now Act 2 of 2026, into law Wednesday. The measure, sponsored by Representative Dane Watro, received bipartisan support in both chambers. Supporters say cursive strengthens cognitive development, improves fine motor skills and helps students read historical documents like the Declaration of Independence.. More than half of U.S. states already require cursive instruction in public schools.
RAISE THE REGION REGISTRATION DEADLINE FRIDAY
The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania is reminding nonprofits that registration for Raise the Region 2026 closes Friday, February 13. The 30-hour online giving event runs March 11th and 12th and has raised more than 21 million dollars since 2013. Last year alone, 375 nonprofits brought in 2-point-3 million dollars. WOMAN CHARGED FOR SUPPLYING ALCOHOL TO MINORS
A Jersey Shore woman is facing charges after police say she hosted a New Year’s Eve party where alcohol was served to underage guests. Lycoming Regional Police allege 53-year-old Lori Fuller provided alcohol to at least 12 people under 21, including three minors under 18. According to the Sun Gazette, Officers responded just after midnight to a reported disturbance outside her Oak Street home and found several intoxicated individuals. Police say additional youths were found inside, along with alcohol containers. Fuller is charged with multiple misdemeanor counts and has been summoned to appear in court.
TRIAL DATE SET FOR MINK FARM VANDALS
Two Massachusetts residents accused of releasing more than 600 mink from a Northumberland County fur farm are scheduled to stand trial in May. Cara Mitrano and Celeste Legere face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges tied to the October 2024 break-in at Stahl Mink Farms in Rockefeller Township. While some charges were dropped, several animal cruelty counts remain. The pair have been released on bail and must regularly check in with Northumberland County Probation ahead of the trial.
FEDERAL MONEY COMING TO LYCOMING COUNTY
U.S. Senator John Fetterman announced nearly 289 million dollars in congressionally directed spending for projects across Pennsylvania, including 2-point-7 million dollars in Lycoming County. Funding includes more than 1-point-3 million to enhance the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company’s regional hub, helping address first responder shortages. The Williamsport Municipal Water Authority will receive 1 million dollars to replace critical water lines, and the AIDS Resource Alliance will get 375 thousand dollars for equipment for its mobile medical clinic serving rural and underserved communities.
SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FROM FCFP
The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania has announced more than 135 scholarships totaling over 410 thousand dollars for the 2026-2027 academic year. Awards range from 200 to 20 thousand dollars and are open to high school seniors and non-traditional students in 14 counties, including Lycoming, Columbia, Montour and Union. Foundation officials say the scholarships help students pursue higher education as costs continue to rise.
