TWO ALARM HOUSE FIRE IN OLD LYCO TOWNSHIP
Volunteer firefighters from across Lycoming County battled a two-alarm house fire Wednesday night on Maple Spring Road. According to the Sun Gazette, crews arrived around 7:40 p.m. to heavy smoke between Beautys Run Rd. and Almost Country Road in Old Lycoming Township. The second alarm brought in additional departments from Loyalsock, Eldred, and Jersey Shore. The fire was under control by 8:15 p.m. No injuries were reported. A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause. More information is expected Thursday.
MAN WITH A WARRANT CAUGHT WITH UNAUTHORIZED FIREARM
A Williamsport man is back behind bars after police say he was caught carrying a stolen handgun in his backpack. According to the Sun Gazette, 55 year-old Kevin J. Brown was arrested September 9 near West Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue on an outstanding warrant. Brown faces felony theft and receiving stolen property charges, along with carrying a firearm without a license. He remains in Lycoming County Prison on $25,000 bail after waiving his preliminary hearing.
LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES BRANCXE FOR GOVERNMENT SHUT DOWN
With the federal government shutdown halting food assistance, food pantries across Lycoming and Clinton Counties are bracing for a surge in demand. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s “Find Food” tool lists dozens of pantries throughout Williamsport, Jersey Shore, Montoursville, and surrounding towns. In South Avis, The New Love Center is preparing for an increase in families needing help, already serving over 2,000 people last month. According to the Sun Gazette, New Love Center Executive Director Holly Beaver says volunteers and donations are vital as local agencies work to ensure no one goes hungry this holiday season. GRANT FOR SAFETY EQUIPMENT BENEFITS WILLIAMSPORT ATHLETES
The Williamsport Millionaires Youth Football and Cheer Association is getting a safety boost thanks to a $6,000 grant from the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. According to North Central PA dot com, the funds were used to buy Guardian Caps, soft-shell helmet covers that help reduce head impact during play. Football Commissioner Brian Dawson says the grant ensures every tackle player has access to top-quality protective gear. Board President Jared Kinley called the funding a game-changer, helping build a safer and more inclusive environment for young athletes.
POLICE SEEK HIT AND RUN DUMP TRUCK
State police in Montoursville are asking for the public’s help identifying a dump truck involved in a crash Monday morning on Route 220 near Beaver Lake Road in Wolfe Township. According to North Central PA dot com, troopers say the truck, believed to be red or maroon, was heading south around 8:20 a.m. when the crash occurred and injured others involved. Anyone with information about the driver or the company is asked to contact State Police at Montoursville – 570-368-5700.
POLICE SEEK TERRORIST WHO HACKED ATMS IN PA AND BEYOND
A nationwide manhunt is underway for a suspected terrorist organization member wanted in multiple states for ATM thefts, including two in Central Pennsylvania. According to North Cetnral PA dot com, state police say 24-year-old Edinson Rangel Romero of Brooklyn used a “jackpotting” scheme—installing malware to make ATMs spit out cash—stealing more than $75,000 from Service 1st Federal Credit Union machines in Kelly and Loyalsock Townships last November. Romero has active warrants in Pennsylvania, New York, and Tennessee, and is believed to be on the run. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact state police.
AMERICUS INVESTS IN NEW DEFIBRILLATORS
Americus Ambulance Company is rolling out new life-saving technology with a $150,000 investment in three LIFEPACK 35 monitor-defibrillators. Americus officials say the upgraded units replace older models, offering faster readings, touch screens, and real-time data sharing with hospitals. The devices are also lighter and easier for paramedics to use in emergencies. Crews are currently training on the new units, which will go into service in the coming weeks.
SOBER SKATING EVENT IN SHAMOKIN DAM
A free family skating event celebrating recovery is coming to the Sunset Skating Rink later this month. Susquehanna Valley Mediation’s “Families in Recovery” program will host a Sober Skate Night on November 29 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the rink on North Susquehanna Trail in Shamokin Dam. Program coordinators say the event helps families in recovery reconnect and learn to have fun while staying sober. Sponsored by Pik-Rite, the event welcomes individuals in recovery along with their families and friends.
