POLICE INVESTIGATE EARLY MONDAY MORNING SHOOTING. Williamsport police say an 18-year-old man was shot early Monday morning on Memorial Avenue. According to the Sun Gazette, officers responded around 2:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire and screeching tires. A short time later, they found the victim inside a nearby home with a gunshot wound to the lower torso. He was taken to UPMC and is expected to recover. Investigators and forensic teams processed the scene, and the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or submit tips online through the department’s crimewatch page.
TWO DEAD AFTER VEHICLE HITS BUGGY. Two children are dead after a car struck a horse-drawn buggy in Northumberland County Sunday night. According to North Central PA dot com, state police say 44-year-old John Koperna of Pottsville admitted he fell asleep before slamming into the buggy on Route 225 in Jackson Township. Six people were thrown from the carriage — a 7-year-old girl died at the scene, and a 9-year-old boy died later at Geisinger. Four others suffered serious injuries, and the horse was also killed. The road was closed for six hours as troopers investigated with an accident reconstruction team.
CHATBOT HELPS TURNPIKE USERS. The Pennsylvania Turnpike has launched a new AI-powered customer service tool called “Miles.” Officials say the chatbot, available on the Turnpike’s website, works around the clock to answer questions about tolling, E-ZPass, travel conditions, and more. CEO Mark Compton says Miles reflects the Turnpike’s commitment to modern, innovative customer service that keeps pace with customer expectations. The system was developed with vendor RSM. Customers can still speak with a live representative by calling 1-877-736-6727 or using the online contact form.
RIVER CLEANUP SCHEDULED FOR RIVER IN LEWISBURG. Lewisburg Neighborhoods will host its Fall River Cleanup this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. while Susquehanna River levels remain unusually low. According to the Daily Item, volunteers should meet at the Lewisburg Borough office on South Fifth Street before heading out to collect trash along Soldier’s Park, the boat launch, Bull Run, and even old tires dumped near May’s Drive-In. Buckets, bags, gloves, and even canoes or kayaks will be provided. Organizers say the low water exposes more debris, making it easier to remove. Bottled water and snacks will be available, and participants are urged to wear sturdy shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.
TRIAL BEGINS FOR 2016 SHOOTING CASE. The trial of Dawud Muneer Rogers opened Monday in Lycoming County Court. Prosecutors say Rogers shot and killed William Blackwell in 2016, calling it a case of “street justice” after a bar fight a week earlier. According to NorthCentralPa.com video shown to jurors captured a masked man firing multiple times at Blackwell as he stood by his vehicle on Boyd Street. Prosecutors called the shooting “cold-blooded murder,” while defense attorney Robert Hoffa argued the case is a “whodunit,” with no witness able to directly identify Rogers. The trial is expected to run all week. Rogers faces homicide and multiple firearms charges.
UTILITY TRUCK HITS TRACTOR TRAILER. A Clinton County man suffered minor injuries in a crash on Route 220 South in Woodward Township around 6:50 Monday morning. State police say his utility truck slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer that was slowing for a school bus. The driver was trapped for about 15 minutes before Jersey Shore EMS took him to a local hospital. Firefighters also responded. Both trucks traveled nearly 300 feet before coming to rest off the road. Traffic was backed up until PennDOT cleaned up diesel fuel and reopened the highway.
PATIENT AND CAREGIVER REUNION AT UPMC. During National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute hosted a reunion of past patients, families, and the caregivers who helped them recover. UPMC officials called it a celebration of resilience, progress, and the lasting relationships built during recovery. The event gave patients and loved ones the chance to reconnect with staff, share stories, and reflect on milestones. Rehabilitation professionals in physical, occupational, and speech therapy were recognized for their dedication to helping patients regain independence and quality of life.

The month kicks off with a Super Harvest Moon on the night of October 6th into the 7th — the first of three consecutive supermoons and the closest full moon to the autumn equinox. Then, the Draconid meteor shower peaks October 8th and 9th, though bright moonlight may limit visibility. Later in the month, the Orionid meteor shower peaks October 22nd and 23rd, offering up to 20 shooting stars per hour under a dark, new moon sky.
