ARREST OVER ASSAULT OF PREGNANT WOMAN
Williamsport police say a man allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman outside his home Friday. According to North Central PA dot com, 30 year old Ahmir Moore Cobb, of Williamsport, reportedly punched the expectant mother—who is carrying twins—multiple times in the face on the 800 block of High Street, leaving her with head and arm injuries before she was treated at UPMC Williamsport. The man faces two counts of aggravated assault of an unborn child, plus charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment, harassment, and public drunkenness. He is being held on $125,000 bail.
JURY FINDS SUNBURY SHOOTING SUSPECT FROM 2022 GUILTY
A Northumberland County jury has found 45-year-old Randy Easton of Sunbury guilty of voluntary manslaughter in a 2022 shooting that left Joey Rice dead. Easton, acquitted of first-degree murder, claimed he acted in self-defense after Rice allegedly swung a machete at him outside a South Third Street home. Police say Easton fired three shots, striking Rice in the back, then fled the scene and was later arrested in Lewisburg. The jury deliberated nearly three hours before returning the verdict. Easton faces up to 30 years in state prison, and both the district attorney and Easton’s attorney say there is more to come in the case.
COUNTY FARM TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE
Lycoming County’s Farm Committee is holding an open house September 18th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the County Farm in Montoursville. According to the Sun Gazette, visitors can see drones planting cover crops, explore farms with virtual reality, and learn how local farmers protect soil and water. Kids can try hands-on activities and discover 4H. The USDA, Penn State Extension, the State Farm Bureau, and other agricultural groups will also be on hand to share resources and answer questions. From Broad Street Montoursville, take Warrensville Road and County Farm Road is approximately two miles north on the right hand side.
ROAD CLOSURES FOR 9/11 MEMORIAL RIDE TODAY
The 9/11 Memorial Coalition hosts the Annual Memorial Ride this afternoon, to honor victims and first responders during the 2001 attacks. Thousands of motorcyclists will gather at the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery before riding through South Williamsport, Duboistown, Williamsport, Loyalsock, Montoursville, Hughesville, and Muncy. According to the Williamsport Bureau of police, motorists should expect road closures in Williamsport from 6 to 8 p.m., including Arch Street from Hiawatha Boulevard to West Third Street, and West Third Street from Arch Street to River Avenue. Vehicles and pedestrians will not be able to cross the procession route until it’s completed.
HELPER ACCUSED OF EXPLOITING SPECIAL NEEDS WOMAN
A special needs woman in Old Lycoming Township is the victim of alleged financial exploitation from a helper, totaling $3,500. According to the Sun Gazette, 58 year old Michele Elaine Lash, of Middleburg, is accused of stealing the funds while serving as the woman’s payee for Social Security benefits, using the money for personal expenses including church donations, home improvements, fast food, and a cruise. Investigators say Lash continued the theft while the victim lived in a group home. She has been arraigned on charges including financial exploitation, identity theft, forgery, and theft by unlawful taking, and is free on $20,000 bail.
STAND OFF WITH POLICE AND DANVILLE MAN ENDS IN ARREST
A Danville man with a history of bizarre livestock thefts is back in custody after a violent standoff with police yesterday. According to North Central PA dot com, State troopers say 44-year-old Jarrett Castelonia was wanted on a firearms warrant when U.S. Marshals tracked him to the Super 8 Motel in Valley Township. Police say Castelonia refused to surrender and was armed with a knife and revolver before being tased and taken to Geisinger Medical Center. Castelonia faces multiple assault and firearms charges, with a preliminary hearing set for September 23.
TRUANCY PROGRAM VOTED DOWN AT MIFFLINBURG
The Mifflinburg Area School Board has voted down participation in a truancy program run by Union County Children and Youth Services. According to the Daily Item, at Tuesday’s meeting, six directors opposed the one-year agreement with JusticeWorks, while three voted in favor, causing the measure to fail. The program was designed to intervene with students after three unexcused absences and before cases reach the courts. Board member Tyler Snook previously called it a “slippery slope.” In other business, the board approved a new four-year teachers’ contract through 2029.
WILLIAMSPORT CITY PROJECTS WRAPPING UP
Several projects are nearing completion in Williamsport. City firefighters have been repainting more than 400 hydrants this summer in the city, with over half already given a fresh coat and crews tackling up to 10 a day. Meanwhile, the Lycoming County Water and Sewer Authority reports the Route 44 water main replacement project is three-quarters finished, with completion expected by September 19. And at Lycoming Crossings in Muncy Township, Chick-fil-A’s restaurant plans have been reviewed and approved, clearing the way for construction next to Starbucks.
