INNAPPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP
A former parole agent at SCI Muncy has been sentenced for having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. According to NorthCentralPA.com, Kenneth Jones pleaded guilty to 18 counts of institutional sexual assault and was sentenced in Lycoming County Court to up to two years in prison, followed by three years of probation. He must register as a sex offender for 15 years and is barred from contacting the victim. The relationship came to light after the inmate reported Jones for stalking. A federal lawsuit is also pending in the case.
WOMAN PUTS BABY IN PILLOW CASE
A Williamsport woman is facing charges after her infant was found in a pillowcase. State Police say 32-year-old Destiny Little had placed the baby inside the sack before passing out from drug use. A relative heard the child crying and found the infant on July 11. The baby, born in state prison earlier this year, has been in the care of relatives. Little is charged with child endangerment and is being held in Lycoming County Prison on $10,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled this week.
EYES ON PRIVATE EQUITY TAKEOVERS
A bill aimed at increasing oversight of private equity takeovers of Pennsylvania health care facilities is facing pushback from the powerful nursing home lobby. According to Spotlight PA, he measure—prompted by hospital closures and bankruptcies like Genesis HealthCare—would give the state attorney general authority to block acquisitions deemed not in the public interest. Though it passed the House, some Senate Republicans have yet to act, and nursing homes want out of the bill, saying it duplicates existing Department of Health rules. Supporters argue added scrutiny is needed to protect patients and communities.
SCOUTING GROWS IN CENTRAL PA
Scouting America’s Susquehanna Council is growing, with over 1,500 boys and girls now enrolled—1,000 Cub Scouts and 500 Scouts ages 11 to 18. The council operates Camp Karoondinha in Union County, a 400-acre site offering outdoor and STEM programs. Since girls joined in 2019, five have earned Eagle Scout honors. The council will appear in the Grand Slam Parade in Williamsport August 12.
ANOTHER SUSPECT NABBED IN MARCH 3 SHOOTING
A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with a March 2024 shooting in Williamsport’s Randall Circle neighborhood.According to the Sun-Gazette, State police say 17-year-old Tykir Jihad Smith, a senior at Williamsport Area High School, was taken into custody Thursday in downtown Williamsport. He’s accused of joining several others in firing shots into an occupied home on March 3, allegedly in retaliation for the killing of 15-year-old Ahmeen Palmer the night before. Smith faces multiple conspiracy and assault charges and is jailed on \$75,000 bail. Three others — two teens and a 21-year-old — have also been charged in the case.
K9 CAPTURES FUGITIVE
A fugitive wanted in multiple states was captured Wednesday in Montoursville near the busy Lowe’s-Walmart shopping area. 32-year-old Elzeife Williams of Atlanta fled into nearby woods when approached by police, prompting a multi-agency search. A police K9 eventually found and helped capture him around noon. Williams is wanted on theft-related charges in Georgia, Virginia, Mississippi, and New Jersey, where officials have been searching for him for two years. He’s being held in Lycoming County, pending medical clearance and extradition.
NATURAL GAS TO POWER AI DATA CENTERS
Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry is eyeing a new market — powering artificial intelligence data centers. According to Northcentral Pa.com a luncheon was held Tuesday at Penn College where Marcellus Shale Coalition President Jim Welty announced a new “Power Generation, AI and Data Center” committee, citing Lycoming County’s 1,000 producing wells and infrastructure as key assets. AI data centers use up to 100 times more electricity than traditional ones, and industry leaders say natural gas will meet that demand.
