CHILD PREDATOR SENTENCED
A Jersey Shore man caught in an online child predator sting was sentenced Tuesday in Lycoming County Court. According to NorthcentralPa.com, 24-year-old Bobby Gene George will serve up to 21 months in prison, followed by three years of probation, after pleading guilty to corruption of minors and criminal use of a communication device. George was exposed by an amateur vigilante who recorded their encounter in December and shared the footage with police. He’ll remain on the sex offender registry for 15 years and is barred from contact with minors.
K9 HELPS NAB MULTI STATE FUGITIVE
A fugitive wanted in multiple states was captured Wednesday in Montoursville near the busy Lowe’s-Walmart shopping area. 32-year-old Elzeife Williams of Atlanta fled into nearby woods when approached by police, prompting a multi-agency search. A police K9 eventually found and helped capture him around noon. Williams is wanted on theft-related charges in Georgia, Virginia, Mississippi, and New Jersey, where officials have been searching for him for two years. He’s being held in Lycoming County, pending medical clearance and extradition.
MONTOUR NO LONGER LISTED AS SANCTUARY COUNTY
Montour County is no longer listed as a “sanctuary jurisdiction” by the U.S. Justice Department, following an updated release this week. According to the Daily Item and The Associated Press, local officials strongly denied the original May listing, calling it false and misleading. They said the county has always followed state and federal laws. The earlier list, which included numerous disputed entries, was quietly removed. The Justice Department says it will continue targeting sanctuary policies across the country.
VISAS GRANTED TO VENEZUELAN TEAM
A Little League team from Venezuela has received visas to play in the upcoming World Series in South Williamsport. According to PennLive.com, the Cardenales team from Barquisimeto, Latin America Region champions, will face Puerto Rico in the opening game on August 13. Little League International thanked the U.S. State Department for helping secure the visas, following concerns after a Venezuelan senior division team was denied entry. It marks the second straight year a team from the Cardenales league will compete in the series.
REWARD POSSIBLE FOR TIPS
A fire that destroyed a home in Cogan Station and forced a family of four to flee in the middle of the night has been ruled arson. According to NorthCentral Pa, investigators say the blaze broke out on the front porch of a home on Pleasant Valley Road just after midnight on March 26, quickly spreading through the house. Fire debris tested positive for an accelerant. Anyone with information is urged to contact State Police in Montoursville at 570-368-5700 or PSP Tips. Callers may be eligible for a cash reward.
THREE DISPLACED BY FIRE
A two-alarm fire Tuesday afternoon displaced at least three people in Old Lycoming Township. According to the Sun Gazette, the blaze started around 2 p.m. in a vacant unit under renovation at a four-unit apartment building on Princeton Avenue. Officials say the fire was electrical in nature and caused at least $50,000 in damage. No injuries were reported. Police helped safely evacuate residents, and the American Red Cross is assisting those displaced.
CHICKEN FARM CONCERNS
A proposed chicken farm and solar array in Muncy Creek Township drew scrutiny during a public hearing Tuesday night. Civil engineer Jon Zartman testified the facility, with five barns housing 70,000 chickens each, won’t harm nearby residents. Zartman addressed concerns over odor, traffic, noise, and manure, but admitted no nutrient management or odor abatement plans have been filed yet. Around 50 people attended the hearing, with several raising environmental and health concerns. The project, by Bollinger Solar and Ag Ventures, is still under review, with the next hearing set for September 4.
BROWN AND KLINE TO BE INDUCTED
Two local sports legends are heading to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. Williamsport’s Gary Brown, an NFL running back and longtime coach, and Lewisburg’s Steve Kline, a former MLB pitcher and World Series veteran, will be inducted as part of the Class of 2025. Brown played for Penn State, played in the NFL and later coached in the NFL after couching at Lycoming College. Brown passed away in 2022 after a battle with Cancer. Kline pitched 11 seasons in the majors and now coaches at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The induction ceremony is set for October 18 in Pittsburgh
