POLICE WARN OF CAR BREAK-INS IN LYCO NEIGHBORHOODS
Police are investigating a rash of overnight vehicle break-ins in Loyalsock Township, where seven to ten unlocked cars were illegally entered near the 1200 block of Sheridan Street late last Thursday. According to the Sun Gazette, a wallet was stolen from a vehicle, but no other thefts were reported from the break-ins. In the city of Williamsport, police did report nearly 40 stolen vehicle cases so far this year, with at least six firearms taken from cars. Most of the vehicles have been recovered. Police are urging residents to lock their vehicles and avoid leaving valuables or keys inside.
MIFFLINBURG MAN CHARGED AFTER ASSAULT WITH A BAT
A Mifflinburg man is facing serious charges after allegedly attacking his estranged wife with an aluminum baseball bat. Police say 39-year-old Joshua M. Kantz struck the woman in the leg during a violent confrontation on July 25 at a home on Market Street. Kantz is charged with felony aggravated assault, along with multiple misdemeanors including terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime, and simple assault. A harassment charge was also filed. The case is being handled through the office of District Judge Jeffrey Mensch in Mifflinburg.
LYCO COMMISSIONERS DECIDE ON RIVERWALK PROJECT
Lycoming County Commissioners have approved a $2 million match to support the Susquehanna Riverwalk extension project. According to the Sun Gazette, the county has already secured over $2.7 million in funding and is pursuing additional grants to reduce the final match amount. Other key actions included new hires across several departments, a $35,000 amendment for medical examiner equipment, and approval of agreements for public safety, legal services, and resource management. The next Commissioner’s meeting is scheduled for August 7 at 10 a.m.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT TUESDAY
Communities across the Valley are preparing for National Night Out tomorrow — a nationwide event focused on building police-community relationships. Lewisburg will host one of the region’s largest gatherings from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Lewisburg Area Recreation Park, with over 95 agencies, helicopter landings, fire demos, and fireworks. In Lycoming County, Williamsport’s Brandon Park celebration runs 5 to 8 p.m. with food trucks, games, and face painting. Events in neighborhoods including Watsontown, Jersey Shore, Montoursville, and Muncy offer a night of food, fun, and public safety engagement.
AIR QUALITY ALERT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT
The National Weather Service has issued an updated Code ORANGE Air Quality Alert in effect until Tuesday midnight for Northern and Southern Lycoming, Clinton, Tioga, Sullivan and several other northern Pennsylvania counties. The alert warns that smoke from wildfires in central Canada has raised fine particle pollution to levels unhealthy for sensitive groups. Officials advise limiting outdoor activities, avoiding strenuous exercise, and refraining from open burning or using gas-powered equipment. Residents are urged to stay indoors when possible and monitor local weather updates to protect their health during this alert.
POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING IN KULPMONT
State police are investigating a Friday night shooting in the 900 block of Maple Street that left a Kulpmont man in critical condition. According to the News Item, police say 32-year-old Brandon Michael Klopp admitted to shooting 36-year-old Damian Dallabrida twice with a semi-automatic handgun during a late-night disturbance. Prior to the incident, police were called about a shirtless, intoxicated man trying to enter a backyard and assaulting Klopp and a neighbor. No charges had been filed as of Saturday evening.
INMATE IN COURT OVER 2022 HOMICIDE
Jury selection is set to begin today for a State Correctional Institution Coal Township inmate charged with third-degree homicide in the 2022 death of his cellmate. According to the Daily Item, 50 year old Samuel Merriweather, originally from Philadelphia, was charged in May following a state police investigation. Authorities say the incident occurred during a fight inside a prison cell, where Merriweather allegedly choked the other inmate to death after an argument. The case is being prosecuted by Northumberland County District Attorney Michael O’Donnell.
“PITTIE” ADOPTION EVENT IN AUGUST AT PSPCA IN DANVILLE
The Pennsylvania SPCA launched its second annual *Pittiefest* last week and will continue the program through August 15. According to North Central PA dot com, the PSPCA in Danville, as well as at locations in Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Chester Springs will offer five dollar adoption fees for pit bull-type dogs, thanks to support from the John & Christine Tortorella Family Foundation. Adopters are invited to visit the four PSPCA sites during open hours to view and meet adoptable dogs. The event aims to boost summer adoptions and dispel myths about pitties. Last year, nearly 50 dogs found homes. All standard adoption procedures still apply.

Cameron Young, who was the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for the 2021–22 season, finally got his first PGA Tour victory Sunday after seven runner-up finishes.
Young had five straight birdies early to build a nine-shot lead and coasted home to a two-under 68 to win the Wyndham Championship by six shots.
He became the 1,000th player to win a recognized PGA Tour event, dating to Willie Park in the 1860 British Open.
