MAN SHOOTS REVOLVER INSIDE HIS HOME
A Williamsport man is behind bars after firing a .357 revolver into the ceiling of his home while a 4-year-old child was upstairs. Police say 41-year-old Joseph Holohan fired the shot during an argument with a woman Monday afternoon at a home on Poplar Street. The bullet struck a room next to where the child was located, but no one was injured. Holohan was arrested without incident and faces multiple charges, including child endangerment and reckless endangerment. Holohan was denied bail.
MURDERER OF PREGNANT WOMAN GETS TWO LIFE SENTENCES
A Crawford County man will spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering a pregnant woman and her unborn child. According to North Central PA dot com, 53 year-old Shawn Cranston of Corry was sentenced Monday to two life terms after being convicted of first-degree murder and the murder of an unborn child. Prosecutors say GPS and DNA evidence showed that Cranston broke into Rebekah Byler’s Sparta Township home in February 2024, and stabbed and shot her. Byler’s relatives attended Monday’s sentencing hearing, but did not speak.
MASTRIANO THINKING OF GUBERNATORIAL RUN
Pennsylvania State Senator Doug Mastriano is hinting at a 2026 gubernatorial rematch against Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro, though he hasn’t officially declared his candidacy. According to PennLive, Mastriano says he’ll make the decision with his wife—and that a Trump endorsement would factor into his plans. A private poll from May shows him leading Republican Treasurer Stacy Garrity by 21 points, despite GOP leaders reportedly favoring Garrity as their likely nominee. The party may endorse a candidate as early as September.
PENNSYLVANIA APPROVES SUNDAY HUNTING
Hunters in Pennsylvania will now have expanded access to Sunday hunting. Starting September 14, 13 Sundays will be added to the 2025-26 hunting season, following the repeal of the state’s longtime Sunday hunting ban. According to the PA Game Commission, the change, authorized by Act 36 and effective September 7, allows hunting on Sundays through December 7—excluding migratory bird seasons due to federal rules. Officials say the move removes barriers for hunters while maintaining wildlife management goals and marks a major shift in Pennsylvania’s hunting tradition.
MAN FLEES POLICE AFTER BURGLARY IN MANDATA
A Shamokin man is jailed on $100,000 bail after allegedly breaking into multiple properties and stealing sneakers during a burglary spree in Mandata. State Police say 32-year-old Joshua Cody Wertz damaged doors, windows, and even a Ring camera early Sunday morning near Route 225. He was spotted with a metal pipe and tried to flee on foot before being arrested. Wertz faces a list of charges including burglary, DUI, resisting arrest, and theft. A preliminary hearing is set for July 29.

NEW ENERGY FACILITIES ADDED TO NUCLEAR PLANT OPERATIONS
Talen Energy, owner of the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Berwick, plans to acquire the nearby Moxie Freedom natural gas facility in a $3.5 billion deal fueled by the rising energy demands of data centers and AI. According to a news release issued by Talen Energy, the plant will add power capacity equal to another nuclear unit. The deal also includes a site in Ohio and is expected to close by year’s end. It comes as Amazon Web Services prepares to build a $20 billion data center campus in Salem Township, just minutes away.
YMCA GETS GRANT FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS
The Sunbury YMCA has received an $11,000 grant from the Community Giving Foundation to boost youth programming and expand access for local families. According to North Central PA dot com, the funding will support financial assistance and help ensure children can participate in after-school programs, summer camps, and life-skills classes—regardless of income. YMCA officials say the grant strengthens their mission to support child development in the Greater Susquehanna Valley.
