TUITION INCREASE SLATED FOR STATE SCHOOLS
A tuition increase is coming for in-state undergraduates at Pennsylvania’s state universities, marking the first hike since 2018. Tuition will rise by 3.6%, or about $280 per year, bringing the annual cost to nearly $8,000 at schools like West Chester, Kutztown, and Millersville. Meanwhile, Penn State’s board of trustees is set to meet Friday to finalize its budget, with the possibility of approving a 2% tuition hike for in-state undergraduates on the main campus for the 2026–27 school year. The State System’s Board of Governors says the tuition increase could be reversed if state lawmakers in Harrisburg approve additional funding.
PENNDOT CAMPAIGN TO AVOID LOW BRIDGES
PennDOT has launched a new safety campaign to help drivers avoid crashing into low bridges. The “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right” initiative urges motorists—especially those driving trucks, RVs, or rental box trucks—to know their vehicle height and watch for posted clearance signs. Over 600 bridge strikes happened in Pennsylvania from 2013 to 2023, causing major damage and delays. Drivers are reminded not to rely solely on GPS and to use 511PA for low-bridge info. The campaign is part of a multi-state effort to improve road safety.

UPGRADES COMING TO LEWISBURG WATER AND SEWER SYSTEM
State Representative David Rowe announced that the Lewisburg Area Joint Sewer Authority has received a $1.45 million loan to upgrade its wastewater treatment system. The improvements include installing vertical UV modules, laying 120 feet of new sewer line and more. Legislators say the investment eliminates risks from hazardous chlorine gas and helps ensure cleaner water flows into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
PA COULD ABOLISH THE DEATH PENALTY
Momentum is growing in Harrisburg to end the death penalty in Pennsylvania. According to North Central PA dot com, the bipartisan House Bill 888 would remove capital punishment as a sentencing option. Advocates say it’s a major step forward, with support from both parties. While no vote is scheduled, the state’s moratorium on executions remains in place. Critics argue the death penalty is costly and inefficient. Supporters cite growing public opposition—now topping 55% in Pennsylvania. The bill wouldn’t affect those already on death row.
