FLASH FLOODING THREAT CONTINUES IN CENTRAL PA
Severe storms and flooding caused major damage in Sullivan County this week, prompting evacuations and emergency rescues. Fire crews evacuated nine homes and rescued people from two vehicles in Muncy Valley, where even the fire station took on water. The Laporte Volunteer Fire Company assisted with boat rescues, working alongside Muncy Valley crews. Fire officials say damage to homes, roads, and driveways is widespread, and some residents remain cut off. With more rain expected Thursday and Friday, officials urge residents to stay alert and be ready to evacuate again if needed.
MAN TO BE SENTENCED FOR THREATENING PENNDOT WORKERS
A Williamsport man was found guilty Friday of threatening PennDOT workers with a rifle during a dispute over property lines. According to North Central PA dot com, 68 year old Dwight Wayne Mosteller, confronted a road crew on Sholder Road in 2023, yelling from an all-terrain vehicle before returning with a gun. Though he never pointed the weapon, one worker testified he feared for his life. A Lycoming County jury convicted Mosteller of terroristic threats, simple assault, and disorderly conduct. Sentencing is set for September 26th.
UPCOMING ENERGY INVESTMENTS IN PA ANNOUNCED
A major investment for Pennsylvania was announced yesterday. According to the Sun Gazette, Capital Power will put $3 billion into expanding and upgrading its gas facility in Shamokin Dam over the next decade. The project includes $2 billion in Pennsylvania natural gas purchases and is expected to create more than 30 full-time jobs. The announcement came yesterday at the summit hosted by Senator Dave McCormick and President Donald Trump, highlighting over $90 billion in energy and AI investments statewide. McCormick says the commitments will create tens of thousands of jobs and make Pennsylvania a powerhouse in America’s energy future.
PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT ABOUT ARCHERY HUNTING
A 30-day public comment period opened Monday on a proposal to allow archery hunting in part of Shikellamy State Park. According to the Daily Item, the DCNR is considering opening about 107 acres of the park’s overlook section in Union County to archery hunting. The proposed area is bounded by County Line Road, George Lane, with a safety zone around the day-use area. If approved, state hunting rules would apply. Comments are being accepted through August 13 at Shikellamy State Park, 401 Bridge Ave., Sunbury or email ra-nrspshik@pa.gov.
WOMAN ARRESTED FOR THREATENING ANOTHER DRIVE
A Sunbury woman is facing charges after police say she threatened to kill another driver following a near-collision on a residential street. According to north Central PA dot com, 27-year-old Alina Victoria Rodriguez shouted threats and profanity after almost hitting another vehicle on Woodlawn Avenue June 19th. Police say the male victim in the case had also been involved in a previous incident with Rodriguez. The woman was charged with terroristic threats and harassment with a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 5th.
UNITED WAY OF NORTHEAST PA STARTS FLOOD RECOVERY FUND
In response to recent flooding across the region, the United Way of North Central Pennsylvania has launched a Flood Recovery Fund to support families in Lycoming, Tioga, and Sullivan Counties. According to a press release, the fund will provide food, shelter, and critical services to those hit hardest with100 percent of donations going directly to relief efforts, with no overhead costs. To donate, go online to uwncpa.org or mail a check to their office at 1 west Third Street in Williamsport. Make checks payable to United Way of North Central Pennsylvania with “Flood Recovery” in the memo.
DMVA TO HELP VETERANS WITH UPDATING PAPERWORK
Pennsylvania’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is urging veterans to reach out if they’ve lost vital service documents like the DD-214. According to the department, the form is essential for accessing benefits, retirement, and employment opportunities. Without it, delays can occur. The DMVA says it can help retrieve or correct records, including the DD-215. Veterans can call 1-800-547-2838 or visit the Lickdale Veterans’ Outreach Center in Jonestown. GRANT FOR EQUIPMENT TO HELP HUGHESVILLE FIRE VOLUNTEERS The Hughesville Volunteer Fire Company has received a $16,000 grant from the Energy Transfer First Responder Grant Program. According to North Central PA dot com, the funding was used to purchase a Genesis Combination Tool, a hydraulic rescue device that combines cutting and spreading functions to speed up vehicle extrications, improve response times and save lives. The grant program supports local first responders by providing funding for essential equipment and training.
