FLASH FLOODING CONTINUES TO CAUSE ISSUES ON THE ROADS
Overnight flash flooding forced about two dozen residents and their pets from their homes in Picture Rocks as Muncy Creek rose rapidly. According to the Sun Gazette, fire officials say the creek jumped from 4.5 feet to 11 feet in just 45 minutes late Sunday, with nearly eight inches of rain hitting Glen Mawr in an hour. Crews went door-to-door urging evacuations, rescuing multiple families — some by boat. The creek crested twice early Monday at 13.5 feet. Several roads, including Routes 220 and 42, are expected to remain closed in Lycoming and Sullivan counties through this afternoon. Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded areas and follow local detours.
SAYRE MAN SENTENCED FOR NEGLECT, IMPERSONATING AN OFFICER
A Sayre man who neglected his partially paralyzed girlfriend and assaulted residents while impersonating a police officer has been sentenced to state prison. According to North Central PA dot com, 39 year old Joseph Richard Hall, will serve up to six years for neglect of a care-dependent person, trespassing, and assault. Police say Hall’s girlfriend suffered severe wounds from lack of care. Hall, who has a lengthy criminal record, had been charged in January with the first-degree felonies and was incarcerated in Bradford County.
JUDGE TO CHOOSE SUNBURY COUNCIL MEMBER AFTER DEADLOCK
A judge will decide who fills a vacant Sunbury City Council seat after council members deadlocked in a 2-2 vote Monday night. According to the Daily item, the tie came between candidates Victoria Rosancrans and Andrew Ramos who ran for the position after a vacancy was created following Lisa Martina’s resignation to become city treasurer. Five candidates were interviewed publicly, but no one gained a majority. Council ultimately voted to petition Northumberland County Court. Judge Paige Rosini, who is not bound to select any of the current candidates, will now choose someone to serve until January.
CUTTERS RAISE MONEY FOR HOPE ENTERPRISES
The 2025 Williamsport Crosscutters 5K on June 28 at Journey Bank Ballpark, raised over $16,000 for the Hope Enterprises Foundation. According to a cutter’s press release, South Williamsport’s Ryan Hughes was the top male finisher, while Montoursville’s Erin Witter claimed top female honors for the fourth straight year. A check was presented early this month1 during Rhashan Jersey Night, celebrating the Cutters’ beloved Director of Smiles. The special jerseys were later auctioned, some topping $300 — all benefiting Hope Enterprises.
ARREST FOR LOYALSOCK MAN AFTER HIGH SPEED CRASH
A Loyalsock Township man was jailed after a series of domestic incidents that ended in a high-speed crash. According to the Sun Gazette, state police say 20-year-old Wade Rinker fled his home last Tuesday, leading troopers on a 6-mile chase through Williamsport before slamming into a concrete divider on Lycoming Creek Road. Rinker was wanted for firing a gun inside a crowded Muncy apartment and allegedly using his car to pin a woman against a wall earlier that morning. He faces multiple felony charges, including assault, burglary, and DUI. Rinker is jailed on $500,000 bail.
WOMAN AND CHILD SUFFER MINOR INJURIES IN ONE CAR ACCIDENT
A mother and her 3-year-old son were hospitalized last Friday morning after a high-speed crash on Route 890 in Rockefeller Township. According to the News Item, the woman’s gray Mazda struck a mailbox and snapped a telephone pole, spinning the vehicle into a driveway. Both were taken to Geisinger Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses reported the car speeding before the wreck, and state police say the vehicle also damaged signs and mailboxes earlier in Kulpmont. Power was cut and Route 890 shut down for hours. The crash remains under investigation.
GROUP SEEKS ANSWERS ABOUT DECLINING MUSKRAT POPULATION IN PA
The Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association is asking trappers, outdoorsmen and women statewide to help find out why the Pennsylvania muskrat population is declining. A new online survey aims to gather data from those who’ve observed the species firsthand. Game Commission officials say muskrat populations have steadily declined since the 1970s even with recent water quality improvements and other aquatic mammals rebounding. Biologists hope the survey will help shed light on habitat changes and regional trends, it is available to the public at middlesusquehannariverkeeper.org.
WEST END LIBRARY ACCEPTING CLOTHING DONATIONS IN SEPTEMBER
The West End Library in Laurelton is kicking off its 5th annual “Drop Your Drawers” campaign to help local children in need. From September 2 through 30, families are encouraged to donate new, packaged children’s underwear, socks, and undershirts in sizes 4 to 16. All donations go to the Mazeppa Manna Food Pantry for distribution. Tied to back-to-school shopping, the drive features popular children’s book character, Captain Underpants as its mascot. * Tampa Bay Rays owner Stu Sternberg has agreed in principle to a $1.7 billion deal to sell the franchise to a group led by a Florida-based developer Patrick Zalupski.
