SU RECEIVES GRANT FOR STREAM STABILIZING STUDY
Susquehanna University has been gifted a nearly $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study beaver dam analogs, or BDAs—man-made structures that mimic real beaver dams. According to the Standard Jounral, the goal is to see if storm-battered urban streams can be stabilized. Installed at the university’s CEER field station, BDAs slow water flow, trap sediment, and reduce erosion—potentially improving groundwater and stream health. The project could reshape stormwater management statewide if BDAs prove more cost-effective than concrete channels and culverts.

FREE LUNCHES COULD CONTINUE IN PA
Nearly all Pennsylvania students could soon get free school lunches under new bills recently introduced in Harrisburg. According to SpotlightPA, the legislation would restore a pandemic-era policy offering no-cost meals to every student, regardless of income, and ban schools from disciplining kids over meal debt. Currently, only about 57% of students qualify for free or reduced lunches based on family income. Supporters say free meals help students focus and reduce stigma, while opponents argue against the $360 million annual cost. The bills await review in education committees as lawmakers debate how to fund the program.
SUNDAY HUNTING ALMOST A REALITY
Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania could soon become a regular reality. House Bill 1431, which would lift most restrictions on Sunday hunting, has now passed the state Senate in a 34-16 vote. The bill now returns to the House for final approval before heading to the governor’s desk. Introduced by Representative Mandy Steele, the measure has strong backing from hunters’ groups and the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. If signed into law, it would end decades of Sunday hunting limitations across the state.
