HEAT ADVISORTY CONTINUES THROUGH WEDNESDAY
A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8pm Wednesday for Southern Lycoming County, along with Union, Northumberland, Snyder, Montour, Columbia, Juniata, Mifflin, and Schuylkill counties. According to the National Weather service, heat index values over 100 degrees can lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun, and remain in air conditioning. Check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure pets have water and shade. Overnight temperatures remain uncomfortably warm and humid.
CITY TEEN FACES CHARGES AFTER GUN THREATS LAST OCTOBER
A Williamsport teenager has pleaded guilty to making terroristic threats and harassment after allegedly threatening to “shoot up” Montoursville Area High School. According to the Sun Gazette, prosecutors say 18-year-old Yaa-sir Nassi Jennings-Cornelius made the threat in an October 2nd Snapchat call, prompting an immediate school safety response. He faces sentencing September 2nd. He is also facing a court date for charges in a related stolen firearm case. Authorities say Jennings-Cornelius was seen in a video pointing a stolen handgun linked to a Hughesville gun shop burglary. No trial date has been set in the weapons case.
SENTENCE FOR WILLIAMSPORT DRUG DEALER
A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to six and a half years in federal prison for distributing meth and cocaine from a Williamsport apartment. According to the Sun Gazette, 42 year old Victor L. Gibbs, pleaded guilty to trafficking over 500 grams of methamphetamine and other drugs from the 400 block of Glenwood Avenue last November. Authorities seized more than $20,000 in cash. Chief Judge Matthew Brann handed down the sentence in federal court. Gibbs will also serve five years of supervised release and has been recommended for a drug abuse treatment program while in custody.
HUNTING LICENSES ON SALE THIS WEEK
Hunting licenses are now on sale in Pennsylvania. General hunting and trapping licenses as well as antlerless deer licenses are also up for grabs and guaranteed to residents through Sunday, July 13. Starting Monday, July 14, unsold licenses will be available to nonresidents, with open sales for all beginning Monday, July 28. Hunters can hold up to six antlerless licenses, and in certain zones, up to 15 total. DMAP permits go on sale August 11. Licenses can be purchased in person or online at huntfish.pa.gov.
MAN ATTEMPTS TO LURE CHILDREN INTO CAR IN SUNBURY
A Harrisburg man is behind bars after allegedly trying to lure children into his van in Sunbury. According to North Central PA dot com, police say 31-year-old David Xavier Hernandez approached several kids and two women June 10th, urging them to get into his silver Chevrolet Express. Hernandez was located at a local gas station and was arrested on an active warrant and found with drug paraphernalia and expired medical marijuana credentials. He now faces multiple felony luring charges and drug offenses in Northumberland County. Bail was set at $300,000.
JERSEY SHORE WOMAN YELLS AT, ASSAULTS POLICE
A Jersey Shore woman is facing multiple charges following a violent confrontation with police. According to the Sun Gazette, authorities say 24-year-old April Ann Howell refused to leave borough property on May 7th after being seen shoveling mud from a ditch on Thompson Street. When officers arrived, Howell allegedly shouted obscenities near a daycare and refused to leave, claiming freedom of speech. As police attempted to arrest her, she reportedly kicked one officer multiple times and later kicked two more. Howell was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and other offenses. She was initially jailed on $20,000 bail and has since waived her preliminary hearing.
BOND NOTE APPROVED FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION IN LYCO
Lycoming County commissioners have approved an amendment to a 2024 bond note to support construction of a new childcare wing at Firetree Place in Williamsport. According to the Sun gazette, the change increases the bond by over $615,000, bringing the total to approximately $2.2 million. Officials say unexpected storm water and sprinkler system costs prompted the adjustment, and commissioners emphasized the urgent need for more affordable childcare in the region. Firetree Place executives say the new facility could open by early 2026. The amendment does not impact county taxpayers.
IMPACT FEES TO BE DISTRIBUTED IN NEPA COUNTIES
The Marcellus Shale Impact Fee continues to generate major revenue for Pennsylvania counties. State Senator Gene Yaw says nearly $25.1 million will return to counties in the 23rd Senatorial District from 2024 natural gas production. According to a press release from Senator Yaw, the Public Utility Commission reports Lycoming County will receive over $2.5 million, while Tioga, Sullivan, and Bradford counties will also see substantial disbursements. Since 2011, the Impact Fee has delivered more than $2.88 billion statewide for local infrastructure and environmental projects, underscoring the economic power of Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry.
