JERSEY SHORE TEEN CHARGED FOR SHOOTING BROTHER
An 18-year-old Jersey Shore man faces multiple charges after allegedly shooting his 13-year-old brother six times with a pellet gun Sunday. According to the Sun Gazette, police say surveillance footage at a community park on Thompson Street, captured Gage Murray shooting the victim who was struck in his arms, back, and chest but did not require medical treatment. Police say a similar incident happened on May 1st, when Murray allegedly shot a 14-year-old boy in the leg with a pellet gun outside his home on Allegheny Street.Murray was arraigned Wednesday on charges including terroristic threats, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.He was denied bail and is currently incarcerated in the Lycoming County Prison.
BARN FIRE LIKELY CAUSED BY DIESEL GENERATOR
Police say a diesel generator sparked a barn fire in the 3000 block of Neitz Valley Road near the Ebenezer Bible Church in Washington Township yesterday morning. According to the Daily Item, about 6 of 40 cows were freed from the burning barn in Snyder County by a neighbor who spotted the blaze. Multiple area fire departments responded at about 9:30 am. The property owners were out of town at a wedding.
SUNDYA HUNTING BILL HEADS TO THE PA SENATE
A bill to fully repeal Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting ban passed the state House this week with a 131-72 vote and now moves to the Senate. Senate Bill 67 would grant the Pennsylvania Game Commission authority to include Sundays in future hunting seasons. Supporters include the Game Commission, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, and various sportsmen’s groups. Game Commission authorities say that allowing Sunday hunting could help keep hunters active locally and support effective wildlife management.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT SOFTBALL FALLS IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
South Williamsport’s Softball team concluded a remarkable season with a runner-up finish in the PIAA Class 2A championship, falling 8-3 to Neshannock at in State College. Despite the loss, the Mounties achieved a program milestone by becoming the first area team in the 2000s to reach consecutive state finals, while winning four consecutive district crowns and 18 games. According to the Sun Gazette, Coach Tom O’Malley commended the team’s dedication, and said they gave everything in the tank yesterday. The Mounties finished the season with a 24-3 record.
TEACHER FROM GEORGIA CAHRGED WITH POSING ONLINE AS TEEN
A former Georgia high school teacher faces multiple felony charges in Pennsylvania after allegedly posing as a teenager online to exploit minors. According to North Central PA dot com, 45 year old Eric Stephen Burton, 45, of Woodstock, Georgia, was arrested in December and extradited to Lycoming County.He is accused of using the Snapchat app to exchange explicit images with at least one local 13-year-old girl.Investigators say Burton posed as a 15-year-old named “Noah Walker” and directed the victim to delete evidence after her parents discovered the communications.Burton, is charged with unlawful contact with a minor, indecent exposure, and tampering with evidence.He remains incarcerated on $500,000 bail.
MORE CHARGES FOR STATE PRISON INMATE AFTER VIOLATING PFA
In Clinton County, Renovo Police have charged 39-year-old Clayton Policastro, currently serving time in state prison, with violating a protection from abuse order on April 27. According to the Lock Haven Express Policastro, formerly of Albion, has a history with the same PFA victim, having been convicted of three prior violations earlier this year. Police say he’s already been sentenced to additional jail time for those offenses. He will appear before the Clinton County Court of Common Pleas on the latest charge. Renovo Police continue to investigate and enforce court protection orders.
NO TAX INCREASE FOR WASD
The Williamsport Area School District has approved a new budget with no property tax increase — marking the fourth straight year the tax rate holds steady at 17.24 mills. According to the Sun Gazette, Business Administrator Wanda Erb confirmed the freeze but warned future hikes are likely. The board also passed the Homestead/Farmstead resolution, giving qualified homeowners up to $545 in tax relief. A finalized state budget isn’t expected until fall.
DEADLINE FOR RENT AND TAX REBATES FOR 2024 EXTENDED
A deadline extension gives Pennsylvania seniors and residents with disabilities more time to apply for rent and property tax rebates. According to state authorities, applications for the 2024 Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program are now due by December 31. Income limits have increased to $46,520, and half of Social Security income is excluded from that calculation. The maximum rebate is now $1,000. Eligible residents include seniors 65 and older, widows or widowers 50 and up, and people with disabilities 18 and older. Apply for free at mypath.pa.gov. Rebates begin July 1st.
