KAYAKER FOUND MONDAY, MAN FROM SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
A South Williamsport man has been identified as the kayaker who went missing Saturday. According to the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office, the body of 26 year old Dakota MacGill was recovered Monday in Loyalsock Creek after an extensive search. Authorities say MacGill’s kayak capsized in the rapids south of the launch site and unlike others with him, he was not wearing a flotation vest and was pulled under by strong currents, the two other people with him made it safely to shore. Search teams from Williamsport, Clinton Township, South Williamsport and Picture Rocks participated in the weekend search looking for MacGill. His body was transported to the Forensic Center at UPMC Williamsport.
ARREST FOR HUNDREDS OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES ON COMPUTER
An Old Lycoming Township man is facing hundreds of felony counts after investigators discovered hundreds of computer-generated sexual abuse images on his desktop. According to the Sun Gazette, the media files of children aged 2 to 12, were found in late January following a family member’s tip. Lycoming Regional Police say 32 year old Matthew David Wilson was arrested Tuesday on West Fourth Street in Williamsport, arraigned on 741 counts of sexual abuse of children, and remanded to Lycoming County Prison without bail.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE AT PARKS IN LOYALSOCK
Four community parks in Loyalsock Township now have life-saving kits equipped with defibrillators or AEDs, tourniquets, and Narcan nasal spray. According to the Sun Gazette, the supplies located at James Short Park, Riverfront Park, Heshbon Park and Bruce E. Henry Park are provided through a collaboration between UPMC North Central Pennsylvania, the Susquehanna Health Foundation, and First Quality, which aims to enhance emergency response capabilities in the community. These kits are accessible through a secure code provided by Lycoming County 911 dispatchers.
MOBILE VETERAN TRIBUTE IN WATSONTOWN NEXT WEEK
The Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit kicks off its Central Pennsylvania tour in Watsontown on June 17. According to the Daily Item, the exhibit will be open to the public at the Canal Boat Pavilion next Tuesday from 1 to 7pm, offering a unique opportunity to honor and remember veterans. According to the Watsontown Borough Council President Greg Miller, upcoming events include Kids Fun Fest on June 21 and the July 4th celebration starting with the traditional passing of the flag at 9:30 a.m. Miller reminds residents that the borough office will be closed on July 4.
DRUG BUST ALSO TURNS UP EXOTIC CATS
A major drug bust in Philipsburg led to the arrest of two individuals and the discovery of two illegal African wildcats. According to North Central PA dot com, Police executed a search warrant June 5th at a Lawrence Township residence, uncovering approximately $85,000 worth of meth, fentanyl, and heroin. Two exotic wildcats were also found caged in the basement, prompting an investigation by the Pennsylvania State Game Commission. Police say 27 year old Jennifer Dixon, and 33 year old Nicholas Rumsey, face multiple charges, including drug trafficking and child endangerment. Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene which Rumsey was prohibited from owning due to a prior felony conviction. The investigation is ongoing through the Clearfield County District Attorney’s Office
CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES COLLIDE
A line-painting accident occurred on Route 15 in White Deer Township on May 29 around 11:30am. According to the Daily Item, two work vehicles—one driven by 34-year-old Peter Andrews of Taylor and the other by 25-year-old J. Cagers Martinez of Oswego, New York—were working on the highway near the Old Route 15 exit. Officials say Martinez slowed to begin painting when Andrews failed to stop in time, causing a collision. Both vehicles were damaged. Neither driver was injured, but Andrews was cited for careless driving. Assisting at the scene were the William Cameron Engine Company and Bailey’s Auto and Towing of Allenwood.
BUCKNELL SETTLES 2020 COVID LAWSUIT WITH STUDENTS
Bucknell University has agreed to a $1.15 million class action settlement with students who sued over the shift to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to PennLive, a federal judge approved the deal, which covers legal fees and awards, including $380,000 for attorneys and $5,000 for the lead plaintiff. About 3,291 students will each receive around $240. The lawsuit argued Bucknell should have provided prorated refunds when campus shut down in March 2020, though the university denies any wrongdoing.
LYCO COMMISSIONERS ALLOCATE FUNDS FOR FISH HABITAT
Lycoming County commissioners recently allocated funds to enhance fish habitat in Plunketts Creek, awarding an $81,000 contract to CUZ Excavating in Canton. According to North Central PA dot com, Commissioners also approved over 200 thousand dollars for a CT scanner for the county coroner’s office and close to $17,000 for U.S. flags to honor veterans in 133 cemeteries across the county. The projects are fully covered by grant funding. The next Commissioners meeting is Thursday at 10 a.m. at 33 W. Third Street.
