A HUGHESVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
A 30-year-old Hughesville man, Alex Kenneth Horn, faces multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting a 7-year-old child five or six times during May. According to Northcentral Pa dot com, The victim disclosed the abuse to authorities at UPMC in Muncy on May 29. State Police report that Horn assaulted the child while babysitting at his home. Horn is charged with five counts each of various sexual assault charges against minors . His bail is set at $250,000 . Court records say Horn was on probation for a second DUI in 2021, while already on probation for DUI and child endangerment in 2020.
OFFICIALS FROM THE KSCD ALERT COMMUNITY TO ALL SAFE
Officials from the Keystone Central School District reassured parents and the community that students at Mill Hall Elementary and Central Mountain Middle School were safe following a gun-related incident in the Mill Hall Borough neighborhood last Wednesday morning. Both schools initiated shelter-in-place protocols as a precaution during nearby police activity. The district confirmed that no students or staff were involved, and law enforcement resolved the situation quickly. Students and staff were released from lockdown once the area was secured. Police have not released any more details about the incident .
HOSPITAL ACQUISITION BILL HEADED TO FULL HOUSE VOTE
Pennsylvania lawmakers have advanced House Bill 1460, aiming to bolster the Attorney General’s authority over hospital acquisitions by private equity firms. According to the Daily Item, lawmakers say the bill responds to the closures of facilities in Delaware County , which left 2,600 employees unemployed. Under the proposed legislation, transactions exceeding $10 million would undergo a 90-day review, with the Attorney General empowered to block deals detrimental to public health. The bill passed the House Health Committee with bipartisan support and is now set for a full House vote.
CELL PHONE USE LAW IN EFFECT NOW
The Pennsylvania law restricting cell phone use behind the wheel goes into effect on June 5th. According to lawmakers, the law named for Paul Miller Jr., who was killed by a distracted driver in 2010, expands existing restrictions in which drivers will no longer be allowed to hold a cellphone — even during a call — while behind the wheel unless it is an emergency. Hands-free and Bluetooth devices are still permitted. Warnings will be handed out for a year and then officers will issue $50 fines beginning June 5, 2026. Governor Josh Shapiro says the goal is to reduce distracted driving crashes across the state.
DRUG CHARGES STEM FROM TRAFFIC STOP
A routine traffic stop in Williamsport escalated into multiple criminal charges. According to the Sun Gazette, 39-year-old Hydia Shavers was pulled over for failing to signal at West Third and Campbell streets. Police say they discovered a bag of about two grams of marijuana in her vehicle. Shavers initially provided a false name and birthdate but later identified herself with her ID, and later admitted to possessing a medical marijuana card. Shavers failed a field sobriety test, and lab results confirmed the presence of THC. This marks her third DUI offense in a decade. She faces charges including DUI, obstruction, false identification, marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession. She was released on $25,000 bail.
WOMAN CHARGED WITH POSSESION OF AN INSTRUMENT OF CRIME
A Sunbury woman has pleaded guilty to a lesser offense after being accused of assaulting a resident at the Selinsgrove Center. According the to Daily Item, 35 year old Kathrine E. Renner was initially charged with misdemeanor striking, shoving, or kicking a dependent person in her care during an incident in August 2023. She later pleaded guilty to possession of instruments of a crime—her work badge—and was sentenced to two years of probation, a $300 fine, and court costs. The Snyder County District Attorney say Renner is prohibited from working with dependent individuals during her probation period.
SUNDAY HUNTING BILL GOES TO PA HOUSE
In Pennsylvania, a longstanding tradition is being reexamined. According to lawmakers in Harrisburg, a bipartisan effort is underway to lift the state’s ban on Sunday hunting. House Bill 1431 recently passed the Game & Fisheries Committee with an 18-8 vote. The initiative is being called a “groundbreaking collaboration” among farmers, wildlife biologists, and conservation groups. Supporters argue that expanding Sunday hunting could help manage deer populations, reduce crop damage, and provide more opportunities for hunters. However, some lawmakers are concerned about the impact on property rights and the need for additional enforcement. The bill now heads to the full House for consideration.
BENCH HONORS VETERANS IN SUNBURY
A new community bench was installed last week and has been dedicated at Sunbury’s Hunter Grant Cemetery honoring Revolutionary War patriots buried there. According to the Daily Item, the Fort Augusta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution unveiled the bench at 1212 Fort Augusta Avenue, highlighting the cemetery’s historical significance and the bench’s role in allowing visitors to reflect on Sunbury’s rich heritage.Organizers say 45 individuals are interred including six Revolutionary War veterans, making it one of the city’s oldest cemeteries.
