WILLIAMSPORT DRUG DEALER CHARGED FOR SELLING TO INFORMANT
A Williamsport man is facing multiple drug charges after allegedly selling cocaine to a confidential informant on four occasions between August and October 2023. According to the Sun Gazette, state police say 40-year-old Nathan Andrew Banks, of W. Third St., met with informants in Jersey Shore and Williamsport, and exchanged a total of 101 grams of cocaine for over $6,000. Banks was recently arraigned on four counts each of delivery of a controlled substance and criminal use of a communication facility. He was remanded to Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $85,000 bail.
LEWISBURG MAN LEADS HIGH SPEED CHASE IN BUFFALO TOWNSHIP
A Lewisburg man was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase exceeding 100 miles per hour on rural roads in Buffalo Township on May 5th. According to North Central PA dot com, 44 year old Ryan Joseph Bickel was seen by state police at Milton on Colonel John Kelly Road around 7 p.m. with dark window tint and an expired inspection sticker. After police initiated a traffic stop , Bickel allegedly started a pursuit that reached speeds over 100 mph and ended two miles later on Aikey Hill Road. Police discovered Bickel’s driving privileges were DUI-suspended, and the vehicle was unregistered and uninsured. Bickel, who has two prior DUI convictions, was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, driving while license DUI suspended, and various traffic offenses. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 1.
WATER RATES TO GO UP IN SELINSGROVE
Selinsgrove Borough is set to increase water rates by 120% starting in July. According to the Daily Item, the minimum quarterly fee for 6,000 gallons will rise from $30.60 to $67.32. Officials say the hike is necessary to align with neighboring municipalities and to qualify for low-interest loans and grants aimed at replacing aging infrastructure, including water lines, well pumps, and meters, at an estimated cost of $25 million. Council members said the borough is considering a simplified billing method for water, sewer, and recycling services.
BROADBAND SURVEY AVAILABLE FOR THE PUBLIC
Residents and business owners looking for improved broadband internet access are being sought by Lycoming County Planning and Community Development in a partnership with ECC Technologies to take a survey with that could help to develop a Broadband Engineering and Deployment Readiness Plan to enhance broadband infrastructure in underserved areas. The survey is available online at lycomingbroadband.com or at local libraries and municipal offices and will be available for 90 days or until the desired response rate is achieved. Individual responses will remain confidential.
JERSEY SHORE WOMAN CHARGED WITH CHILD ENDANGERMENT
Police discovered drug paraphernalia within reach of five children while they were performing a welfare check in Jersey Shore on May 22nd . According to North Central PA dot com, , 26-year-old Eliza Paige Bletz allowed officers into her North Broad Street home, where drug paraphernalia and drug residue was accessible to two children under six and three others under 18. Bletz faces endangering the welfare of children and drug possession charges and is currently being held at Lycoming County Prison on $85,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing is June 4.
FLORIDA MAN EXTRADICTED FOR RAPE CHARGES
A Florida man is being held without bail in Northumberland County on rape charges after being extradited from Jacksonville. According to the Daily Item, 42 year old Andre Jarrell, was arrested in February following an investigation that began in October 2023. Sunbury police say a woman accused Jarrell of sexually assaulting two minors. The investigation revealed an outstanding arrest warrant for Jarrell in Sunbury before Florida authorities apprehended him, and through an extradition warrant in April signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, he was recently returned to Pennsylvania . Jarrell was in Sunbury District court last Thursday, and is incarcerated at Northumberland County Jail.
MONTOUR COUNTY A “BILL OF RIGHTS” SANCTUARY CITY
Officials in Montour County are disputing claims by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that labels the county as a “sanctuary jurisdiction” hindering federal immigration enforcement. According to the Daily Item, Montour County was one of 11 Pennsylvania counties included in a list following President Trump’s April 28 executive order, however, the county had actually been declared a “Bill of Rights Sanctuary County,” emphasizing their commitment to upholding constitutional rights. The Sheriff’s Office has current programs in place qualifying them as a pending agency for ICE’s 287(g) program, which allows local police to collaborate with federal immigration authorities.
SULLIVAN COUNTY JOB CORPS OFFICE, ONE OF 100 TO CLOSE
A Job Corps center in Sullivan County is among over 100 nationwide set to close by June 30 due to federal budget cuts. According to the Sun Gazette, the Red Rock Job Corps Center, located in Lopez, offers vocational training in fields such as automotive repair, construction, and business. The U.S. Department of Labor announced a phased pause in operations, citing a $213 million deficit and concerns over safety and program effectiveness. Officials say students will be supported through the transition, with efforts to connect them to alternative education and employment opportunities
