INTERSTATE CLOSED AFTER OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
There was a high speed chase that ended in a police involved shooting and it closed I-80 West near White Deer Township into the early hours of Saturday. According to State police at Montoursville, Troopers observed a driver of a white F-250 speeding with dark tint on the windows on Route 15 near Joe Road in Union County, and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and led a chase through to Greene Township in Clinton County. After deploying spike strips, Troopers engaged in gunfire with the driver who suffered a leg injury from an officer’s shot. The unnamed suspect was treated at the scene and then transported to Geisinger in Danville. No troopers were injured in the exchange and continue an investigation of the incident. I-80 west was closed for the investigation until 3qm Saturday.
FORMER PENN STATE ATHLETE INJURED, PASSENGER DIES IN ATV CRASH
A deer strike is the alleged cause of the ATV accident involving Former Penn State wide receiver Julian Fleming who was seriously injured and his passenger who was killed around 8pm Friday night in Bradford County. According to State police, Fleming was said to be driving a 2024 Yamaha ATV with 23-year-old Alyssa Boyd of Bloomsburg as his passenger, on Painter Lick Lane in Columbia Township, when they collided with a deer that had jumped out in the roadway. Authorities say neither Fleming or Boyd were using helmets or safety equipment. Fleming was transported to Guthrie Troy Community Hospital, Boyd was declared deceased at the scene. A deceased deer was located near the scene that had consistent injuries from the damage observed on the ATV.
SUPPORT CONTINUES FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF CLAUE
The Superintendent of South Williamsport School District, Dr. Eric Briggs, addressed the board during a recent meeting addressing the sadness many feel over the death of third grader Claue Schreffler-Algofera whose body was found in the Susquehanna River last week after being swept away earlier this month while playing on the shore with her family. Dr. Briggs said counseling and assistance is still available at the school for students and staff who need support. Friends are holding a benefit for Claue Sunday, June 8th from noon until 4pm to help her family at this difficult time. The event will be a the Harmonia Club on East 7th Street in Williamsport.
HEALTH FAIR FOR SENIORS IN LEWISBURG WEDNESDAY
There will be a health fair to celebrate National Senior and Fitness Day tomorrow at the Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness in Lewisburg. According to the Daily Item, the day is part of a program that designed to help adults age 55-plus connect, learn and live their healthiest lives. The health fair will feature pickleball and golf simulator demos, health screenings as well as a short seminar about how to avoid scams that target seniors. Wednesday’s program will be held at the Miller Center at 120 Hardwood drive in Lewisburg from 9am til noon.
MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES DROPPED FOR SUNBURY MOTHER OF INFANT
The felony involuntary manslaughter charge for the April 10th death of a Sunbury mother’s 6-day old infant has been dropped, but she will still face a charge of endangering the welfare of children. According to the News Item, 31 year old Ashley Usadel waived to county court her endangerment charge, and the endangerment charge against 35 year old Travis Smart, was dismissed during the couple’s a preliminary hearing in Northumberland County Court on Tuesday. Authorities say first responders were unable to revive the infant after it was found unresponsive after 2am. Usadel told police there was no bassinet for the baby and allowed the baby to sleep in bed with her.
TODDLERS FOUND BY POLICE WANDERING ON ROADWAY
Two Union County parents are now facing child endangerment charges after their two toddlers were found walking on Trutt Road in Union Township along on March 6th at about 8am when it was below 40 degrees. According to North Central PA dot com, troopers observed an address on the backpack of one of the children and the 3 and 4 year old were returned to the Winfield home of Sherry Ann Kline and Zachary Eugene Jordan who police say they woke up and upon questioning said they thought the children were asleep as well. Police say the children had been outside for about 2 hours. Charges were filed against the couple May 14th.
SHAMOKIN POLICE WARN OF DANGEROUS DRUG MIX ON THE STREET
Shamokin police are putting out the word that they are concerned about a new drug mixture is on the streets after there have been several drug overdoses this week. According to the News Item officers say local recovery specialists say if you’re struggling with opioid addiction, you can go into an emergency department at any hospital and ask for recovery services. Free naloxone is available and replenished daily outside of Dapper Tattoo, 709 N. Liberty St in Shamokin.
CROSSCUTTERS INVITE YOU TO THE CUTTERS 5K IN JUNE
The Williamsport Crosscutters, along with Hope Enterprises, Inc., will host the Cutters 5k at Journey Bank Ballpark coming up June 28th. According to Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi, the event is open to all ages and abilities, including wheelchair users, children in strollers, and any other wheeled mobility equipment and will run through Williamsport’s west end with the final leg taking place inside the stadium at Journey Bank Ballpark. Registration is $25 per person and participants who register before June 6th will make the T-Shirt deadline. Entry Forms and information is at crosscutters.com. The Cutters 5k has generated almost $140,000 for Hope Enterprises and the Hope Foundation since its inception.
