MAN ARRESTED FOR HOLDING VICTIM AGAINST HER WILL IN SAYRE
A West Burlington man is in custody after police were called by a victim’s mother who said her daughter was being held against her will in a drug riddled apartment by a man wanted by police in Sayre. According to North Central PA dot com, police went to the apartment in Page Manor in Sayre to rescue the victim and take 26 year old Damien T. Ramirez Jr. into custody but he originally hid in a bedroom closet before officers used tear gas to force him out. After several attempts and then shooting a non-lethal round into the hiding place, Ramirez surrendered to police who later charged him with felony counts of kidnapping and manufacturing, possessing with intent to deliver, and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment, simple assault and more. He is being held at the Bradford County Jail on 500 thousand dollars bail. His preliminary hearing is May 27th.
TOWANDA WOMAN SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON FOR 2020 DUI
A woman from Towanda is being sent to state prison after having her probation revoked and a resentencing for her 2020 DUI. According to North Central PA dot com, court records say 60 year old Cherilyn Fisher served some time for the latest conviction, her third in ten years, but could not comply with probation requirements set down in 2023. She recently received harsher sanctions including a state prison term and DUI charges now graded as a third degree felony.
CELL PHONE USE TO BE RESTRICTED BEHIND THE WHEEL JUNE 6
The Pennsylvania law restricting cell phone use behind the wheel goes into effect on June 5th. According to lawmakers, the law named for Paul Miller Jr., who was killed by a distracted driver in 2010, expands existing restrictions in which drivers will no longer be allowed to hold a cellphone — even during a call — while behind the wheel unless it is an emergency. Hands-free and Bluetooth devices are still permitted. Warnings will be handed out for a year and then officers will issue $50 fines beginning June 5, 2026. Governor Josh Shapiro says the goal is to reduce distracted driving crashes across the state.
LIVE WHEEL OF FORTUNE COMING TO WILLIAMSPORT
Sony Pictures Television and Right Angle Entertainment are bringing “Wheel of Fortune,” to Williamsport’s Community Arts Center as part of a live nationwide tour this fall. According to a press release, audience members will be chosen to come on stage and spin the wheel for a chance to win a vacation or cash prizes and even a get chance to be selected to audition on-site to appear as a contestant on a future “Wheel of Fortune” TV episode alongside hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White. Tickets for the show in Williamsport, September 23rd, go on sale today.
PROBATION FOR WOMAN ACCUSED OF TAKING PTO FUNDS
The woman who made a deal with the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office after she was accused of stealing cash from Montgomery Area School District’s PTO funds and other actions last August due to substance abuse, pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of children and will serve 5 years probation. According to North Central PA dot Com, Elizabeth DeSantis successfully completed the drug court requirements of rehab treatment and therapy, which led to the charges of theft and misbranding of a controlled substance to be dismissed.
GREAT VALUE STORE BURGLARIZED IN TURBOTVILLE
State Police at Milton are seeking a suspect who they say damaged a local store during a break in to take 60 dollars-worth of Marlboros. According to North Central PA dot com, the unknown suspect used a tool to pry open the double doors at the Turbotville Great Value around 11am May 12th stole the cigarettes and fled. The business was closed when the alleged burglary took place. DMV CENTERS CLOSED FOR MEMORIAL DAY
All PennDOT driver license and photo centers, including the full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed this Saturday, May 24th through Monday, May 26th, for observation of the Memorial Day holiday. According to the Department, customers can still get a variety of driver and vehicle products and services, like forms, publications, and driver training manuals, online at pa.gov/agencies/dmv. There are no additional fees for using online services.
LAUREL FESTIVAL 10K FOOT RACE If you’re planning on attending the Laurel Festival this year in Wellsboro, and would like to participate in the Laurel Festival 10k foot race or the two-mile fun run or walk on Saturday, June 21st, registration is open now.
