SOUTHSIDE GIRL FEARED DROWNED
Emergency crews responded to the South Williamsport side of the Susquehanna River Sunday morning after a ten year old girl was swept away in the current while swimming and is feared to have gone over the dam near Front and Winthrop streets. According to the Sun Gazette, a search for the girl began around 11am after two other children ages 10 and 13, and an adult who were also in the water allegedly attempting to rescue the girl, managed to get to shore to be helped by emergency personnel at the scene. Work by a special search and rescue team continued through the afternoon looking for the girl who officials fear may have drowned. The search and rescue mission was called off by 7pm Sunday and is scheduled to continue this morning. The missing girl is a third grader at South Williamsport Area School District and Superintendent Eric Briggs expressed concern for the friends and family for the missing girl and said counselors will be on hand this week to help support faculty and students during this difficult week.
THEFT BY EMPLOYEE AT WALMART
A man who was employed at a Walmart in Lewisburg is facing theft charges after asset officers there discovered that he stole over a thousand dollars of merchandise over 5 months. According to North Central PA dot com, PSP Milton were called to the store after 40 year old Eduardo Rivera-Lopez of Winfield was suspected of thefts from November of 2024 until last month. After he was confronted Rivera-Lopez provided a written statement admitting his guilt he was then charged with felony retail theft. His preliminary hearing is June 5th.
CHEF-BOYARDEE TO BE MANUFACTURED IN MILTON
Conagra Brands and Hometown Food Company recently entered into a 600 million dollar cash definitive sales agreement that will license a number of certain food products to be manufactured at their facility in Milton. According to a press release, the sale includes the manufacturing facility, as well as all assets and operations dedicated to the Chef Boyardee shelf-stable products with the exception of frozen skillet meals. Approximately 500 people are employed at the Conagra Milton facility. The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of Conagra’s fiscal year 2026.
NEW TRANSFER STATION RULES FOR GARBAGE TRUCKS
The policy of what type of trucks will be accepted at the Williamsport Lycoming County Resource Management Services (LCRMS) Transfer Station is changing next month. According to North Central PA dot com, roll-off containers or hooklift trucks will no longer be accepted at the station at 1475 West Third St, but will be allowed at the LCRMS landfill at 447 Alexander Drive, Montgomery for disposal instead. MAN ARRESTED AFTER POLICE FIND HIM WITH METH AT WORK
After a search last year at a local car dealership that turned up methamphetamine inside the toolbox of an employee, police have filed charges against the employee and his partner who police found with meth after a search of their home. According to North Central PA dot com, police took 45 year old Kevin Scott Fournier into custody before his employer, the owner of R&S Auto Sales consented to the police search that uncovered the drug on the premises. Another warrant was issued for Fournier’s home where Mary Eiswerth was found with 22 grams of the drug. Police also found several firearms that Fournier was not allowed to have. He has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm, possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance and more. Eiswerth also faces the drug chare. They are both jailed in lieu of bail.
MAN ARRESTED FOR STRANGLING DAUGHTER
A Williamsport judge has denied the bail of father who witnesses say strangled his child when she woke him refusing to sleep at 2am on April. According to North Central PA dot com, the child told a relative about the incident when they asked about marks on her neck and said her father did it. Police say 28 year old Peter Lee Singer at first denied that he caused the bruises on the child’s throat, but evidence contradicted that claim. Singer’s charges include strangulation, aggravated assault of a minor and endangering the welfare of children. Judge Denise Dieter ruled that He is danger to himself from untreated mental health issues.
VOUCHERS AVAILABLE FOR NORRY SENIORS TO GET FRESH FRUIT, VEGGIES
The Northumberland County Area Agency on Aging and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging along with the County Board of Commissioners are offering qualifying seniors the opportunity to receive five vouchers valued at $5 each to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables from participating farm markets. According to the Standard Journal, Northumberland County residents who will reach their 60th birthday by Dec. 31 or older and who meet income guidelines can apply. All five Adult Community Centers in Northumberland County have the applications and proxy forms. Vouchers are available on a first come first served basis until September 15th. Vouchers are redeemable June 1 through Nov. 30.
UNCLAIMED PROPERTY EVENT IN WILLIAMSPORT THIS WEEK
Lycoming County residents can take part in a search for unclaimed property this week at the Lycoming County Treasurer’s Office on West Third Street. According to the Sun Gazette, Lycoming County Treasurer Cindy Newcomer is hosting the event in Williamsport Thursday from noon til 2 and residents could claim cash from forgotten bank accounts, safe-deposit boxes and more. The average claim is worth about $1,600, and more than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property. No reservations are necessary for this week’s event.
