SHAMOKIN MAN FOUND GUILTY OF ATTEMPTED MURDER
A Shamokin man has been found guilty of felony attempted homicide and aggravated assault from 2020 by a jury this week in Northumberland County Court. According to the Daily Item, , Akeem Gregory was found guilty of attempting to kill Joel Santiago, of Shamokin who testified that he and Gregory were arguing earlier in the day over drug money owed to him. Court records say the incident escalated over a couple days into a police standoff where Gregory barricaded himself inside a Mount Carmel home before police took him into custody. The jury deliberated for four hours – no word on a sentencing date.
ZONING PERMIT FEES WAIVED UNTIL AUGUST
The Lycoming County Commissioners approved a request this week from the county’s Planning and Community Development department to waive zoning permit fees until August 31st for homeowners who were affected by Tropical Storm Debby last summer. According to the Sun Gazette, the resolution helps support recovery efforts for flood victims and upholds standards for homes in the floodplain, reducing future vulnerability to damage caused by floods and storms.
PUBLIC MEETING ABOUT ATHLETIC FIELDS
A public meeting has been announced to get input about athletic fields at Line Mountain School District. According to the Daily Item, school officials have arranged the meeting with a group of appointed property committee members to discuss an athletic field feasibility study. The meeting will be March 18th at 6pm. Board President Troy Laudenslager, Ron Neidig, Lauren Hackenberg and Dennis Erdman are the appointed members of the property committee.
TRAUMA CLASS FOR FAMILIES NEXT MONTH
In an effort to teach and support parents and caregivers who manage families effected by trauma, a series of sessions will be hosted by the Children’s House Child Advocacy Center at the Bradford County Library. According to North Central PA dot com, Trauma-Informed Parenting Sessions will take place over 6 weeks starting March 24th from 4-6pm and provide tools and insights into trauma-informed care that helps families and children grow stronger bonds and heal from challenges. SUNBURY MAN ARRESTED FOR TERRORISTIC THREATS
A Sunbury man is facing assault and terroristic threat charges after threatening his family during a domestic disturbance February 18th. According to North Central pa dot com, police were called to the home by family members where 23 year old Zachary Querry argued with his father who witnesses said he was told by his son to buy a gun and kill himself. Querry posted 10 percent of $5,000 cash bail with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 4.
FORMER BUSINESS OWNER CHARGED WITH THEFT
A local pizzeria owner is facing theft by deception charges after he backed out of a catering job last year for a boys soccer booster club and didn’t return the money paid for the services. According to North Central PA dot com, 37 year old Mark B. Mangiardi of South Williamsport the former owner of Leo’s Pizza, took over 600 dollars for a catering job for November then later canceled the contract agreeing with the client to return the money. The victim had to go to Lycoming Regional Police to report a theft by deception last month. Mangiardi was charged with the misdemeanor January 17th and is free on 10 thousand dollars unsecured bail.
MASTRIANON CONSIDERING GUBERNATORIAL BID IN 2026
Three lawmakers in Pennsylvania have not ruled out running for Governor of the Commonwealth in 2026. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer State Senator Doug Mastriano said he may consider another showdown against Governor Josh Shapiro for the midterm elections. Mastriano lost to Shapiro by nearly 15 percent in 2022. Republican U.S. Representative Dan Meuser and PA Treasurer Stacy Garrity may also considering the gubernatorial run next year. Governor Shapiro is up for re-election in 2026 with recent results reflecting his popularity in the polls.
DORNSIFE BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE EARLY
The bridge that was under construction on Route 225 in Little Mahanoy Township is reopening ahead of schedule this Saturday. According to PennDOT, the truss bridge was struck by a truck hauling an excavator in December and crews deemed the bridge unsafe after an inspection. Now that the Dornsife bridge is set to reopen, motorists are advised there may be minor construction with flaggers going forward. Repairs began February 3rd and included removal of the damaged steel truss members and replacement with new steel beams, heat straightening and miscellaneous repairs. The original completion date was at the end of March.
