BACKYARD BROADCASTING LOCAL NEWS – September 24, 2022

Almost $99,000 was raised in the 5th Annual Over The Edge event, at the William Hepburn Apartments on Friday. Approximately 811 donors participated with 67 descenders rappelling down the side of the structure. The money raised goes toward the River Valley YMCA, the YWCA of Northcentral PA and the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation. Participants either paid or raised at least $1000 to participate. The event also tied in with the Block Party, hosted by UPMC Susquehanna on Friday evening, in downtown Williamsport, along Fourth Street.

The Lycoming County Coroner, Chuck Kiessling Jr. is on the hunt for property, that would enable his office to have sufficient space for performing autopsies, and other services. Kiessling took to social media recently to solicit interest for such a space. Lycoming County Commissioners would like to combine some other county offices into a joint location to save money for residents. They have wanted to move District Justice Christian Frey’s office, the Children & Youth offices, and the Lycoming-Clinton Mental Health & Intellectual Disabilities office, along with a Central Processing Facility for suspects. UPMC Susquehanna has available property that they would consider selling; but, Kiessling wants a more safer and secure location. Other possibilities include a location on Arch Street in Newberry.

The ongoing legal battle between the Lycoming County Commissioners and the Lycoming County Controller continues. The controller, Krista Rogers won her case against the county in July; but, the commissioners are appealing the decision. Rogers is also trying to get four employees returned to her office, as was previously allotted to her office.

The Shamokin Area School District has made a change as to how fans can attend home events at football games. As of last night’s football game, the district has decided that fans that attend games must stay in their seat during the course of the contest. No roving around the stadium, due to safety concerns. Evidently there were issues with the first two contests at Kemp Memorial Stadium, and the changes will stay in effect until the end of the season.

A 19 year old was sentenced to 4 to 15 years in state prison after shooting a 14 year old and wounding a pizza delivery driver, in two separate incidents from 2020. Nigel Staten-Chambers received the sentence from Lycoming County Judge Nancy Butts, after reviewing the pre-sentence report and stated that Staten-Chambers has been in trouble with the law, since he was 11. Staten-Chambers agreed to a plea deal in June, for attempted robbery and aggravated assault.

A murder suspect formerly of Williamsport, is requesting a new lawyer in Columbia County Court, after twenty years being accused of murdering in Buckhorn, in an apparent drug deal gone wrong. 44 year old Brian Quinn of New Jersey filed a motion to have a change in counsel, feeling that his counsel is not qualified to defend him. According to the Press-Enterprise, Quinn is accused of killing Shamar Washington, 17, over a $200 deal for drugs. No word on whether the judge will grant the request for a new counsel.

Old Lycoming Township Police dropped charges of robbery, theft and receiving stolen property; after the girlfriend of Runnel Hairston, refused to testify in court. Hairston was accused of stealing a drawstring bag from his girlfriend on September 12th. Hairston did plead guilty of summary disorderly conduct, before District Justice William Solomon. Hairston was given credit for the 9 days served in the Lycoming County Prison.
