POLICE RELEASE IDENTITY OF BARRICADED GUNMAN
The man who was shot and killed by a State Special Emergency Response Team after a 14 hour standoff in Elkland has been identified. Pennsylvania State Police say 68 year old Delos P Lowe was killed by police while barricaded inside his home at 1507 Barney Hill Road. It began around 11:30am Tuesday when 3 state troopers came to Lowe’s property to perform a welfare check. After announcing themselves and entering the home, Lowe fired upon the officers, with shots hitting one who was life flighted from the scene and one trooper injured in the incident. The standoff ended 2am Wednesday after an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police. According to a press release, the trooper who was shot is hospitalized and in stable condition, the injured trooper has been released from the hospital. Police say an investigation remains ongoing in this case.
LIFE SENTENCE FOR ELDRED TOWNSHIP MURDERER
After a continuance since summer, a native Virginia man found competent to stand trial in the 2017 murder of a senior citizen from Eldred Township, has been found guilty this week. According to the Sun Gazette, 25 year old Graham Nicholas Norby-Vardac killed 82 year old Donald Kleese Jr in his home at Quaker Hill Road in April of 2017. According to Court reports, Norby-Vardac who had broken into the home around 7am, had intent to kill Kleese when he threatened to call police on him, and he was later-on taken into custody by Canadian border patrol officers after being discovered in Kleese’s car. Norby-Vardac will serve a mandatory life sentence in state prison for the charges.
ACCIDENT SLOWS TRAFFIC ON NORTHBOUND 220
Both Northbound lanes of 220 were blocked by a tractor trailer accident yesterday around 10:30 am. According to police, an oversize load truck hit the railroad bridge overpass causing the load to shift on the truck on Route 220 at the 287 intersection in Jersey Shore. There was a detour along Route 44 to the Main Street Exit and Route 654 heading north into the city that lasted about an hour. There were no injuries reported or debris on the roadway.
CITY ROAD TO REOPEN AFTER REMODEL
Basin Street is open one way for now but will open for two-way traffic before the holidays, according to city officials. Basin Street will open as a north-south boulevard between East Third and East Fourth streets . The remodeled section has been closed since March, and add upgrades such as new sidewalks and a grass medial strip with new lighting. State Department of Transportation multi-modal grants and private organizations funded the $2 million reconstruction.
DOMESTIC ASSAULT CHARGES IN BEAVER SPRINGS
An investigation continues this week into a domestic assault in the Beaver Springs area. Selinsgrove State Police say a 32 year old woman intentionally drover her car at a 17 year old male November 29th at a home on Snyder Avenue in Spring Township. Police have not released any names in the case.
LEGISLATION COULD REFORM PAROLE SYSTEM
Leaders in the Pennsylvania House this week announced legislation to reform Pennsylvania’s probation and parole system, to help parolees avoid pitfalls that can keep them in the state’s penal system. Pennsylvania has the second-highest percentage of citizens on probation or parole in the country, and according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, nearly one-third of prison beds were occupied by people who violated their terms. The bills introduced, would prohibit consecutive sentences of probation, offer expungement of records and provide employment opportunities for former offenders.
BUFFALO CREEK NOMINATED FOR RIVER OF THE YEAR IN 2020
Pennsylvania has a river of the year award, and one nominee for 2020 is Buffalo Creek. The creek forms north of the Laurelton region and travels near Mifflinburg to Lewisburg. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the nonprofit Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers annually pick nominees for the honor. A public vote determines the winner at PaRiverOfTheYear.org. DCNR will award a $10,000 grant to the organization that nominated the winner and offer to hold promotional activities. The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania would receive the money on behalf of Buffalo Creek.
